Lymph nodes are defense structures that can also be affected by breast cancer. Understand when and why they appear on mammograms.
Lymph nodes are natural structures that are part of our immune system, responsible for filtering harmful substances, such as viruses, bacteria and even cancer cells. Lymph nodes are present throughout the body. But, analyzing specifically the area near the breast, it is more common to find them under the armpits.
“We could have it lymph nodes in the breastcalled intramammary lymph nodes, but they are rare. The most common thing is to have lymph nodes only under the armpits,” explains oncologist Wesley Pereira Andrade.
Also called lymph nodes and, popularly, tongues, these structures are natural to the body and, when altered, are not necessarily indicative of cancer. Most lymph nodes become enlarged due to benign conditions, such as inflammatory and infectious processes.
To find out if the lymph nodes in the armpit or breast (the latter is rarer) are swollen, you must first palpate the area. If you feel a sort of “mass“, could be a sign of some change. If this symptom persists for more than two or three weeks, the recommendation is to contact your doctor.
