Nutritional monitoring:

According to BioMundo nutritionist Dr. Fernanda Larralde, only a liquid diet is allowed during the first 7 days after bariatric surgery, such as water, skimmed milk, light broths and sugar-free gelatin. From the eighth day onwards, new foods are gradually incorporated into the eating routine every week or fortnight, with changes in the consistency of the foods (mushy, dense mushy, soft and loose). After this period, it is advisable to consume small, balanced meals, divided several times a day. Dr. Fernanda emphasizes: “Nutritional monitoring is essential to ensure adequate nutrition and prevent complications.”

First, the patient must follow a diet plan prescribed by a nutritionist, calculated to provide the maximum possible nutrients through a varied diet. “It is essential to use food supplements to ensure the intake of proteins and essential micronutrients,” adds Dr. Fernanda.

Foods high in sugar or high in refined carbohydrates should be avoided to prevent dumping syndrome, which can cause symptoms such as excessive sweating, headache, rapid heartbeat, diarrhea, weakness and nausea. Also avoid condiments, peppers, caffeine and fried foods.

Dr. Fernanda Larralde says nutritional supplementation is extremely necessary after surgery. “The main nutrients to supplement include iron, B vitamins, vitamin D, omega-3s, and protein. Other supplements are prescribed as needed, based on the evaluation of blood tests or the patient’s medical report.”
