Fewer products, more results: effective and multifunctional formulations, topical and oral, help rejuvenate men’s skin
In addition to men’s skin having its own peculiarities, men tend to be resistant to the use of many skin care products. And while they have thicker skin, they also lose collagen as they age.
“Men’s skin is oilier, especially Brazilians, who live in a tropical country, because the heat itself stimulates the production of sebum by the sebaceous glands. And men already produce more fat because they have larger sebaceous glands, especially on the face, since the hair follicles that form the beard have, around each hair, sebaceous glands for lubrication. In addition, there is the action of male hormones, which are great stimulators of the production of fatty acids that end up serving to feed the bacteria present on the skin, making the skin more congested, oily and prone to acne,” explains dermatologist Claudia Marçal, member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology.
As for daily care, they are supporters of “less is more,” meaning fewer products but greater effectiveness. “Generally, men stick to just one type of topical formulation, which is effective in synergistically promoting better firmness, fighting cellular senescence, and reducing excess sebum. This is how the concept of Men Skin Recovery was born,” explains pharmacist Patrícia França, scientific director of Biotec Dermocosméticos.
A panel at the latest IMCAS congress in Paris estimated that the male skincare and beauty segment has grown by more than 60% in recent years. The American Society of Plastic Surgery, for example, points out that the share of men has also increased, although it is small (8%).
Plastic surgeon Beatriz Lassance, a member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, says that depending on the diagnosis, the use of dermocosmetics alone may be enough to treat imperfections and skin aging in men, but when the choice is for aesthetic procedures, naturalness is key for them.
“Men often come to us to improve some aspect of their face, but they don’t want anyone to notice or they don’t want to break away from their routine. But, thanks to technology and advances in the sector, there are now techniques that give the patient the desired result in a natural way and with little or no recovery time,” explains Beatriz.
What treatments?
The treatments most sought after by men are those that offer rapid results and with the least number of sessions. One of the classics is botulinum toxin: “The application of botulinum toxin is generally done in specific points on the forehead and between the eyebrows to treat dynamic wrinkles by relaxing the muscles in the area that has received the drug,” explains Claudia.
Biostimulators, according to Beatriz, are also widely used. “Recommended for cases of slight sagging and superficial irregularities of the skin, the procedure consists of injecting substances, such as calcium hydroxyapatite and polylactic acid, under the dermis, where they will cause inflammation and consequently stimulate collagen production. There is no need to take time away from usual activities and the final result appears between 4 and 6 weeks after the procedure,” explains Beatriz.
According to dermatologist Claudia, this type of injectable can be combined with microfocused ultrasound, which creates coagulation points to stimulate collagen.
In cases of moderate or severe sagging, which benefit little from aesthetic procedures, Beatriz recommends surgical lifting, as it aims to lift and reposition the tissues and muscles, promoting a face lift, softening wrinkles and folds and recovering the contours of the face.
“In the same procedure, volume can be restored with fat grafting, that is, fat is removed from the patient with thin cannulas and grafted as a kind of filler into the face,” says the plastic surgeon.
But the surface of the skin also deserves attention, according to the dermatologist, with treatments such as Hydrafacial.
“The hydrodermabrasion device features the exclusive and patented Vortex-Fusion technology, which generates a vortex effect to easily expel and remove impurities from the skin while providing hydration. It is a completely painless procedure, which guarantees clean, healthier, hydrated skin, with more luminosity and a soft and smooth touch. The procedure promotes a deep cleansing without using tools that cut or physically penetrate the skin tissue, on the contrary, it works to eliminate dead cells while cleansing, hydrating and replenishing the essential antioxidants that our skin needs, promoting its natural restoration, explains Claudia Marçal.
What about skin care?
To overcome male resistance to skincare, one strategy is to invest in multifunctional formulas. “A multifunctional product adds more than one consolidated function to the treatment, with the aim of providing correction, prevention, improvement or attenuation of the blemish in question in a single formulation. The formula must bring together in a single application multiple chemically compatible active ingredients and can perform a hydrating, illuminating, anti-sebum and antioxidant action,” explains Claudia Marçal.
Pharmacist Patrícia França suggests a topical formulation with Algisium C, Astrasinol, Scutaline in the Hydra Fresh base. “Synergistically, this formulation will promote better skin firmness by activating collagen and elastin synthesis, as well as combating cellular senescence (zombie cells), the effects of inflammation on the skin (inflammaging) and excess sebum,” she explains.
Does a supplement help?
According to the dermatologist, the use of nutraceuticals is essential to improve the internal condition and balance of the body. In addition, the pharmaceutical company also claims that oral supplementation manages the aging process and optimizes the results of different procedures.
“The formula can count on Exsynutriment and Glycoxil to stimulate the production of extracellular matrix constituents, mainly collagen, in addition to helping preserve it. It is also possible to use FC Oral and Bio-Arct to manage inflammation and improve fibroblast activity,” explains Patrícia. “We can also use In.Cell to replace amino acids, vitamins and minerals, with the aim of minimizing muscle loss and contributing to the synthesis of collagen and elastin; Another strategy is to invest in Osteosil to modulate bone resorption,” concludes the pharmacist.
