Oral hygiene is harmful if done incorrectly; explains the expert
Brushing your teeth is essential to maintaining oral health, but one dentist has warned that a common mistake could cause more harm than good. Oral health expert Dr. Andrej Bozic of Dentum in interview with the Express newspaperhas issued a serious warning about the dangers of excessive and vigorous brushing.
While frequent brushing is essential for removing plaque and preventing cavities, brushing too vigorously can damage delicate gum tissue, Dr. Bozic explained.
The result? Receding gums, exposing sensitive tooth roots that are prone to decay and discomfort. Gum recession often goes unnoticed until the damage is significant. It is usually caused by aggressive brushing habits, which create openings for bacterial invasion and gum disease. If left untreated, this condition can lead to tooth loss.
Keep an eye out for the following signs of receding gums:
- Tooth sensitivity: overreaction to temperature or sweet foods.
- Visible tooth roots: teeth that appear longer, with more root surface exposed.
- Gum discomfort: pain or sensitivity after brushing.
- Bleeding gums: predisposition to bleeding during oral hygiene.
Dr. Bozic recommends using a soft-bristled toothbrush to maintain good oral hygiene without damaging your gums.
“It’s gentle on the gums, but effective at cleaning teeth without causing abrasion. Brushing shouldn’t be a harsh action. Use light pressure and let the bristles do the work. If you notice that the bristles of the toothbrush are open after a short period of time, you’re probably brushing too hard.”
Proper brushing technique is also key. Bozic said, “Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and use short, circular strokes.” The dentist also recommends avoiding back-and-forth motions, which can irritate and damage your gums.
She also emphasized that brushing your teeth for two minutes, twice a day, is sufficient for proper oral hygiene. “Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are worn,” she adds.
“Preventing gum disease and tooth decay is more than just brushing your teeth regularly,” the specialist assures. “It’s about brushing your teeth properly and gently to protect your gums from receding. By adopting these simple but effective habits, you can maintain a healthy smile for a lifetime.”
