Understanding the condition and how to maintain a normal life
Every month new surveys are released to raise awareness among the population about health and, in this sense, the survey by Fenacelbra (National Federation of Celiac Associations of Brazil) found that celiac disease affects 2 million Brazilians.

Of these, 80% have no known diagnosis and 70% confirm the disease only after the age of 20. Keep in mind that one in 100 people in the world, or 1% of the world’s population, is affected by celiac disease.
“We do not know exactly how and when an individual ends up being affected by it, since the mutation that leads to this disease, which is autoimmune and has a genetic and environmental basis, is present in up to 30% of the general population, but only 1% of the world and Brazilian population suffers from celiac disease,” said the gastroenterologist Dr. Nelson Cathcart Jr.
This specialist reported that celiac disease can be diagnosed through some blood tests and biopsies. Although it is incurable, the disease can be controlled with a gluten-free diet.
“Unlike patients with certain food intolerances, there is currently no drug for celiac disease, however there are ongoing studies so that in the future there will be greater possibilities of controlling the disease,” he commented.
Signs and Symptoms Beyond the Gut
Diarrhea, stomach pain, bloating, weight loss are the classic symptoms. In children, growth retardation is one of the warning signs. Headaches, iron deficiency, vitamin B12 and other nutrients. Osteoporosis, osteopenia, infertility and changes in menstrual flow in women are also symptoms that deserve to be warned.
“All of these conditions can be associated with celiac disease and these individuals deserve to be investigated. It is important to raise awareness,” concluded Dr. Nelson Cathcart Jr.
