Better Than the Strongest Detergents: 20+ Ways to Use WD-40

Can you guess why you need to lubricate your bird feeder with WD-40?

What is WD-40?

Water Displacement (“water displacement”) – this is the abbreviation WD. The number 40 represents the attempt of chemist Norman Larsen to find a formula for a water-repellent and anti-corrosion spray, although it may be just a company legend.

It soon became apparent that WD-40 was not only capable of this, it also did a great job of removing dirt, grease and soot. The spray migrated from garages to kitchens, and over the years of practice, homemakers discovered a great number of ways to use it.

Here are a few that we think deserve attention.

Ways to Use WD-40

Clean the toilets

Spray the spray on stubborn limescale stains and mineral deposits and leave for a few minutes. Scrub the plaque with a brush, a special toilet bowl pumice stone or sandpaper, and it will dissolve easily!

Removing wax crayon marks

Parents, raise your hand if you’ve ever discovered that a child thinks of walls as a canvas, not just a scrapbook! Sometimes crayon marks seem impossible to remove, but WD-40 can do the job easily: Just spray it on, wait a minute or two, then wipe it off with a cloth or sponge.

Treat tools

First, WD-40 is an excellent lubricant for springs and seals in wire cutters, pliers, and scissors. Second, you can apply a thin layer to gardening and work tools, and rust will not appear on saws, rakes, and shovels.

Clear stickers

That pot is too cute to throw away, but is that sticker you can’t get off about to change your mind? Apply WD-40 to the remaining glue and paper, wait a few minutes, then wipe off the residue with a sponge.

Take off the ring

In the evening, your hands are swollen and you can’t get the ring off your finger? Spray it with WD-40 – this hack works much better than the oil hack. Don’t forget to wash your hands immediately: if the spray stays on your hands for a long time, it can lead to dryness and irritation.

Treat your car windows

A thin layer of WD-40 on your car windows in winter will prevent snow and ice from sticking to them: apply the spray to the glass, then wipe it with a dry cloth. By the way, this trick also works great for windows in the house!

Remove the eraser

Did you step on chewing gum? Wet it with WD-40, wait a few minutes – after that it will easily come off the sole. The same trick can be used if chewing gum is stuck in your hair – both regular and tactile for hands, which children love to play with.

Soak your shoes

Don’t have a special shoe spray at hand? It can be replaced with WD-40 – it will create a waterproof coating on its surface. Spray the spray on a cloth and wipe the outside of the shoes with it. First, check the effect of the product on a small, inconspicuous area.

Treat the shower cubicle

Tired of cleaning hard water stains off your shower walls? Wash them, apply some WD-40, scrub with a dry cloth – and they’ll be gone.

Separate the LEGO bricks from each other

how to use WD-40

Sometimes the bricks of the designer “stick” tightly to each other – it seems that the castle assembled from them can never be disassembled into bricks. WD-40 will facilitate the task: spray it into the space between the parts, let it penetrate for a few seconds, and then separate the cubes.

Remove stain from carpet

WD-40 can be used in combination with your favorite carpet cleaner when you need to remove stubborn stains. Spray it on first; the WD-40 will seep between the fibers and the dirt, making it much easier for the carpet shampoo to do its job.

Treat the hangers

Are your hangers moving along your closet bar with a squeak, rather than easily and smoothly, and it’s annoying you? Apply some WD-40 to the crossbar, wipe it down with a microfiber cloth – and everything will change!

Preventing wasps

Wasps love to build nests under roofs, and few people are happy with such a neighborhood in the country. In the spring, spraying a little WD-40 under all the eaves of your house will keep the insects away.

Protect wooden parts from tools

All tools fail sooner or later, but you can extend their life. Rub a generous amount of WD-40 into the handles of shovels and rakes to protect the wood from moisture and keep it smooth.

Renewing plastic furniture

Is your plastic furniture discolored and very dirty, so much so that you are already considering replacing it with new ones? Spray the chairs with WD-40, wipe them with a dry cloth and you will be surprised by the result!

Remove superglue from your fingers

If you’ve ever stained your stamps with it, you know how unpleasant it is – it seems like it’s simply impossible to get that film off. However, just apply some WD-40 to your fingers, rub them together and it will disappear instantly.

Removing Hair Dye Stains

Got hair dye on your clothes or towels? Spray some WD-40 on the stains, rub it in, then wash the items at 40-60 degrees.

Polishing stainless steel

Stainless steel tends to be tarnished by any cleaning agent. WD-40 will help restore its former shine – spray it on a cloth, then buff the surface with it.

Wipe the artificial flowers

Fake plants can also benefit from the superpowers of WD-40: spray them with a little spray, buff the leaves with a cloth and they’ll shine just like the real thing.

Protecting family money

Polishing with WD-40 can keep silver shiny. Use a spray if you want to keep your grandmother’s plate from tarnishing. (But follow the safety rule: Sprays shouldn’t be used to clean items that come in contact with food.)

Protect your fittings

Have you decided to update your kitchen and paint the cabinets? Apply a thin coat of WD-40 to all the handles. If any paint gets on them, you can remove it in one go.
