Whey Protein is a supplement based on proteins extracted from milk, that is, it is the drink that helps you reach your daily protein goal. Among its main benefits are the increase in muscle mass, the decrease in body fat and muscle recovery after physical exercise. Despite this, its consumption is still surrounded by doubts, for example: do whey proteins affect the liver?

Whey protein does not affect the liver!

“We still have no scientific evidence to suggest that the use of whey protein can be harmful to the liver. However, excess protein in the diet can overload the functioning of the liver and kidneys. Therefore, consumption should be done under professional guidance,” says the nutritionist at the Specialized Center for Obesity and Diabetes at Hospital Alemão Oswaldo Cruz Bruna Lima in an exclusive interview for Sport Life.

Likewise, there is no prohibition on the consumption of whey protein for a person who has liver problems. This fact denotes the importance of consulting a specialist for safe ingestion.

“Before starting the supplementation, it is important that the person consults a nutritionist to carry out a complete evaluation, with biochemical tests, and thus understand what to integrate,” underlines Bruna.

It therefore becomes impractical to indicate a daily or weekly consumption for a subject since it is necessary to take into account whether he is an amateur athlete, a high-performance athlete or someone who does not usually train with intensity or frequency.

“The daily dose varies from individual to individual. There are no contraindications to whey proteins. They can be used by anyone, young or old, but it is necessary to be careful with people who already have kidney problems, since in this case the proteins need to be adjusted”, explains the professional.

Which supplement overloads the liver?

“Vitamin A, which can cause liver cirrhosis. Some B vitamins can also damage the liver. Vitamin E can cause hemorrhagic stroke, and vitamin C consumed in high doses can acidify the urine. Therefore, reiterate that all supplementation should be done under professional supervision,” he guarantees.

What does too much whey protein do for a guy?

“An excess of whey protein does not cause major damage to health, but it can cause acne and gastrointestinal disorders. In addition, this excess protein will be excreted from the body through urine,” concludes nutritionist Bruna Lima.
