When will Greater SP breathe cleaner air again?

Sao Paulo had 23 days of rain in 5 months. Air quality was terrible. Know when it rains again.

The photo shows the skyline of the city of São Paulo in the late afternoon of August 19, when several neighborhoods recorded poor or even very bad air quality, which is the second worst indicative classification of air quality in the capital of São Paulo. The scale defined by Cetesb indicates good, moderate, bad, very bad and very bad air quality for measuring different types of pollutants.

Also this Tuesday 20 August the air quality was considered very poor due to the excess of fine particulate matter (mp2.5) and ozone (O3).

Only 23 days with rain and 5 months

The passage of a strong cold front around August 10th brought 43.8 mm to São Paulo, exceeding the historical average for August, which is 32 mm. This did not prevent the air quality from becoming very bad or the humidity from falling to critical levels, below 20%. The problem is that the heavy rains occurred in a single day and this pattern has been repeated since April: rare days of rain and almost always light.

Sao Paulo had 23 days of rain in 5 months or 143 days, from the beginning of April to August 20, 2024.

April: 7 days with some rain / in 30 days

May: 31/5

June 0/30

July: 31/2

August: 20/02

When will Greater SP breathe cleaner air again?

Rain and wind are the air cleaners, but it needs to be rainy and windy at least moderately intense for the air to be clean. Rain and breeze are not worth it.

This “real” rain is expected to occur only next weekend, when a new and strong cold front will pass through the state of São Paulo. Until Friday, August 23, Greater SP will continue to be dry and unusually warm for this time of year.

Radical change in humidity and temperature

We must start preparing for the new thermal shock at the end of the week. On Friday, August 23, the city of São Paulo should still feel the heat of up to 32°C, but on Saturday 24, the maximum temperature of the day should not exceed 22°C. And Sunday is expected to be cold and rainy with less than 10°C in the morning.
