Since winter lasts until September 23 this year, Brazil will still have several cold days until the end of the season. And it is precisely at these times that there is an increase in cases of respiratory diseasessuch as colds, flu, sinusitis, bronchitis and some allergic reactions. The problem is even greater in the case of children and the elderly.
Therefore, it is important to adopt some prevention practices to ensure this. on in the immune system and fight any disease that may appear. And according to Dr. Talita Pavarini, a specialist in aromatherapy and integrative practices, a good alternative in this sense is to try essential oils in combination with traditional treatments.
“It’s important because these methods complement traditional treatments, helping to relieve symptoms safely, as long as they’re guided by a healthcare professional, without the same side effects as medications,” she explains.
Essential oils are basically mixtures of volatile chemical compounds produced by plants and have numerous benefits for humans. “They are obtained from various parts of the plant, including flowers, leaves, bark, roots and fruits, using various methods, with a focus on steam distillation,” the expert reveals.
Next, better understand their benefits in case of respiratory diseases and how to use them:
Benefits of essential oils
According to Dr. Talita, there are compounds in essential oils that help with respiratory conditions. “The main ones include eucalyptol (found in eucalyptus oil), which has anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties, and menthol (found in peppermint oil), which helps relieve congestion and coughs,” she says.
Using essential oils in a diffuser can help prevent and treat some respiratory problems. They improve nasal congestion, cough, and reduce inflammation of the airways.
It is worth remembering that, despite the positive results, the treatment does not replace conventional treatments, being therefore a complementary and helpful practice. In addition, it is also important to talk to your doctor before using essential oils, to see if they will really do you good.
How to apply
As for the application methods, the specialist reveals that the most effective and safe way is to use the inhalation route and you can use an ultrasonic diffuser without a filter.
“Put 250 ml of water and 4 drops of essential oils and inhale for 15 minutes (adult dose). Dry inhalation is also possible by dropping a drop of essential oil on a cotton ball and inhaling deeply 3 times (especially when you are outdoors, at home or in a collective environment). Other methods require guidance through consultation,” he explains.
Care and precautions
According to Dr. Talita, you need to be very careful about the dose of essential oils when trying to use them for respiratory diseases. She explains that some people think that because they are natural, they do not do any harm and that you can use any dose you want, but this is not the case and an excessive amount can even cause poisoning.
“Never doubt the power of a drop! Another concern is to believe that all essential oils can be applied directly to the skin. This is a big mistake and can lead to dermatitis and allergic processes. The safest method is to dilute it and apply it to the skin. “The skin with a vegetable oil (never mineral),” she explains.
As for contraindications, children of all ages, pregnant women, people with a history of epilepsy, asthma, allergies, and difficult-to-manage hypertensive patients should undergo a consultation, since the composition of some essential oils can compromise their health.
“With a detailed assessment of how the patient is associated with the need of the moment, the prescription of essential oils is assertive,” she concludes. In any case, Dr. Talita Pavarini also warns of the importance of seeking professional guidance. This helps ensure the safe use and benefits of essential oils.
