Religion adopted by Hollywood stars like Tom Cruise did not receive Stamos well

John Stamos left Scientology — but not willingly. In an interview with the podcast hosted by Matt Friend, Friend in High Placesthe actor of the series Three’s a Crowd recalled when he was expelled from the organization as a teenager.

“I was in an acting class, and there was this hot girl,” he said. “She said, ‘You know, let’s meet at this address on Hollywood Boulevard. Come after class. ‘ I was working at my dad’s restaurant at the time, and I said, ‘Dad, I gotta go, I gotta go. ‘ So I went. I was like 16 or 17.”

It was only when Stamos arrived at the address he realized that the place was a Scientology building. The star of General Hospital was soon invited to try out the E-meter, “a religious artifact used as a spiritual guide in auditing” (via scientology.pt). To use the instrument, one must hold two metal cans, which made it Stamos made a joke.

John did an imitation of the cartoon The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkleas if he were using a telephone, but the Scientologists “didn’t like that”: “I was just messing around so much that they were like, ‘Get out of here. ‘ They kind of kicked me out.”

The actor spoke about the episode in his memoir If You Would Have Told Me (2023) and stated that he does not intend to give Scientology another chance.
