Many people want to have beautiful hair, but they forget to take care of the “soil” from which hair grows: the scalp. But the risks are different, because a diseased soil does not usually bear good fruit. For this reason, we consulted dermatologist Mônica Aribi, member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, to explain 7 truths about the importance to give to this region:
1. Scalp care is essential for healthy hair. According to the doctor, this happens because, in case of imbalance in the conditions of the scalp, the nutrition, hydration and oxygenation of the hair are compromised.
2. The main care for your scalp is to prevent it from becoming too oily or dry. The doctor explains that it is necessary to wash with the appropriate frequency for each skin type. “The more greasy ones sometimes need to be washed daily, but even the drier ones need to be washed at least twice a week, always without rubbing or massaging. It is also very important to rinse very well so that residues of products such as shampoo and conditioner do not clog the hair follicles,” says the doctor.
3. It is worth investing in specific products for the scalp. Each skin type, according to the dermatologist, requires products with specific types. “This product is not the same for the other member of the family. For example, the most recommended active ingredients for treating oily scalp are: ketoconazole, which works by reducing the number of colonies of the bacterium Pityrosporum ovale, which increases sebum; zinc, which acts as a regulator of the sebaceous glands, preventing excessive production of sebum; and salicylic acid, in more severe cases, to prevent flaking,” explains the doctor. For sensitive scalp, you should avoid products based on urea and use products based on alfabisabolol, which according to the doctor is a natural skin soothes. “For this type of skin, it is also worth looking for products with thermal water, which has anti-inflammatory and calming effects,” he explains.
4. Anti-residue shampoo is not a lifesaver for everyone’s scalp. The residues are very harmful to the scalp, but it is necessary to use an anti-residue shampoo only in cases where the patient does not rinse effectively for a long time, explains Mônica.
5. Lack of scalp care also causes hair loss. “Hair loss cannot be caused only by a lack of skin care, but it is very common for it to be triggered by this cause. The relationship is mainly due to the fact that if the skin does not function well, the hair follicles close and the hair stops being nourished and hydrated,” warns Mônica.
6. Dandruff on the scalp is very different from the accumulation of residues. According to the doctor, in general, people have dandruff due to a genetic tendency and it is very different from residues. “In general, dandruff is white and soft; Meanwhile, residue is darker and stickier,” he comments.
7. Scalp peeling can be a sign of emotional stress. According to the doctor, this is not uncommon. “Another reason is the tendency to be oily, but which is not taken care of properly. This peeling is treated through the use of shampoos suitable for oily skin or lotions based on zinc or salicylic acid. The wounds show that, due to the oiliness, the patient feels itchy and scratches, sometimes without realizing it or while sleeping. In these cases we must treat with topical healing agents or even oral antibiotics. The most important thing is to seek medical help,” he concludes.
