Brand posts video claiming dessert was created ‘by accident’ over 20 years ago; there is no business partnership between the company and Virginia
Maria Alice and Maria Flor, daughters of Virginia Fonseca and Zé Felipe, love popcorn, but the girls’ favorite is a gourmet version, covered in chocolate, available in a can, costs R$ 165 and has gone viral on social media. After seeing their 3- and 1-year-olds enjoying their mother’s stories (Virginia has nearly 49 million followers on Instagram alone), some are buying them to try, and those who find it expensive are trying cheaper recipes, making them at home.
“Marias popcorn”, as it is known, does not currently have any advertising partnership with the girls, but is from the Chocolat Du Jour brand and is sold in a 310 gram can for R$ 165 and covered in milk chocolate.
Taking advantage of the viral effect, one of the company’s partners, Patrícia Landmann, recorded a video in which she explains that this delicacy has existed for over 20 years and that the idea of selling popcorn was born from the need to fill the cans sent in larger formats through the supplier that served the brand.
“It actually came from a problem we had…. Based on this problem, if we returned the cans, the supplier would no longer serve us. So we thought, ‘what if we put popcorn in cans?’ The idea seemed crazy, but then we covered the sweet popcorn in our chocolate and it was incredible, we couldn’t believe it was so good because every morning we would come to the office and we couldn’t stop eating it because we didn’t know if it was really right for our audience and, basically from day one, Choco Pop was a success,” he said.
“It’s funny to think that Choco Pop was born by chance – or rather, out of our need – and has become one of Chocolat du Jour’s best sellers. Of course it has its merit, a caramelized popcorn covered in our fine chocolate could not be anything other than ‘deliciously irresistible’! But do you know why we decided to bet on this product that has been on our shelves for over 20 years?”, reads the text in the video’s caption.

Influencer Lucas Rangel made a video trying out “Pipoca das Marias” and approved. “I’ll tell you that the Marias are connected, you know? You eat one, you eat another… When you see it, you’ve eaten it all,” he said.
“I’m craving popcorn! But I don’t have the courage to pay 165 reais,” wrote one follower.
