According to experts, sport inhibits the use of drugs, helps children’s cognitive functions, socialization and reduces public health costs.
Maintaining your health and reducing physical damage in the medium and long term is not as complicated as it seems. Making physical activity easier is just one of the responsibilities of the Physical Education professional.
Employees of the Sports Secretariat of the State of São Paulo, Louis Carlos Oliveira AND Camila Jordan They have degrees in the field and make a living spreading wellness. For them, the physical education professional must be that guide that leads an individual to embrace a healthier life.
“The main social work of the Physical Education professional is to enable people to use physical exercise to improve their living conditions. Scientific research shows that daily physical activity is as important as sleeping and eating.“, says Luis Carlos, confirming the study conducted by Harvard University which establishes that a 20-minute walk for at least five days a week reduces the probability of contracting a serious disease by up to 43%.
“Sport inhibits the use of drugs – a pre-diabetic, for example, no longer has this condition -, helps children’s cognitive functions, socialization and reduces public health costs”, adds Camila.
Despite their efforts, a physical education professional cannot change a global reality alone. We need solid public policies that encourage and further democratize sport. “If we have leaders who support physical activity and sports, we will all win,” defends Camila.
Even working with physical education has its myths, such as the one according to which professionals in this field must necessarily have an aptitude in some modality. In this case, academic, empirical knowledge and nuances surrounding sports and body health are more than enough.
“The most important thing is to have general knowledge. It is prejudicial to think that a professional must master all disciplines or have practiced sports at a certain level”comments Camila. “It’s relative. It happens in high-performance sports, with people who were not excellent athletes, but became good coaches. In physical education it’s the same thing. Experience in sport, whether practiced or not, contributes to professional success” , adds Luis.
Changing people’s lives for the better. That’s what Camila and Luis Carlos work for. And the recognition comes, sooner or later. “I influenced so many people, college students. I showed how essential physical activity is,” comments Camila. “I have been a teacher for 30 years and during this time I have heard from many students at events who saw me as a reference that I was responsible for planting a seed“, says Luis.
But what will be the future of the territory? For Camila, the fact that activities such as walking are increasingly popular gives even more visibility to the Physical Education professional. “This area has a promising future. There is appreciation for our work and studies are increasingly showing people how important exercise is and how it can save lives.”
