I have lost count of how many times I have found my lettuce or herbs blasted by the constant cold of the refrigerator. Storing leaves and spices is often difficult, if planted they look good and last as long as they are watered frequently. This type of plants really like water, but if they are fresh and harvested, we need care so they can last longer in the refrigerator.

How to keep the leaves in the refrigerator longer

Since the leaves have a lot of water in their composition, the ideal is to keep them in the least cold part of the refrigerator, usually located in the lower part. Every time I put them on the top shelves, some of the leaves were frozen and then soggy, terrible …

But before putting the leaves in the fridge, it’s worth remembering that cleaning and drying are key. The drier and cleaner they are, the longer they will last. I really like using those centrifuges that dry the leaves by turning, but you can also lay the leaves on a tea towel or paper until they dry.

The important thing is to always keep the leaves dry.

It already stores the sheets in the two ways I’m going to share with you, and each of them has its own advantage. In glass jars with a seal closure, I put a sheet of blotting paper on the bottom, place the sheets and put another on top and close the jar.

So they last more than a week, the leaves do not shrivel and the pot, being thicker, protects the leaves even more. The second way is very similar to this of using blotting paper, what changes is the packaging, I also like to use zip lock envelopes, I put the sheet at the bottom and complete with sheets. When I have little space in the fridge it helps me a lot, but it can crumple the leaves.

Another very important tip for when you have a salad ready on a serving plate and you can’t put the sheet of paper on, avoid condiments or fruit that release a lot of water and cover with cling film.

I love to consume fresh and crunchy leaves, these were the ways I found to have no more waste and I leave my fridge super organized with everything in its place.
