Coffee expert explains which types of coffee and extraction methods are preferred in Brazil and the world

Everyday “coffee” is consumed around the world in different concentrations, flavors, and extraction methods. According to Ensei Neto, a coffee expert and Paladar columnist, the preferred way of making coffee for Brazilians is “the good old filter.” And that includes different types of coercion. As for flavor, on average, the Brazilian palate requires a coffee with body and low acidity, characteristics found in traditional coffees, gourmet coffees, and specialty coffees.




In the case of the strainer method, for example in rural cities and in the North and Northeast regions, the preferred method is the cloth strainer. However, since the 1970s, coffee filtered with a paper filter has begun to gain ground in Brazil, becoming the preferred method today. But what about espresso? Don’t worry, it is also a favorite among Brazilians, but it is much more present when consumed in restaurants and cafes.

Thinking globally, different cultures make coffee tastes varied, even within the same continent. Find out below which coffees are preferred in Europe, Asia, and some parts of North America.

What is the favorite coffee in Europe?

In Italy and parts of France, concentrated and intense coffees are the most sought after. In terms of preparation methods, espresso and coffee made with an Italian coffee maker are the most popular. The Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) favor filtered coffees and espressos with lighter roasted beans.

What is the most consumed coffee in Asia?

Since the Asian tradition is more focused on tea drinking, delicacy and balance are essential factors in Asian coffee. For the Japanese, the sensation is filtered coffees with medium roast and a concentration of 7 g/100 ml. They prefer a fuller and sweeter drink on the palate. The Chinese also prefer filtered coffee.

In the case of the Far East (parts of China, Japan, North Korea, Mongolia, South Korea and Taiwan), there is a clear preference for full-bodied and velvety coffees in the mouth, with a good balance in terms of acidity.

In the case of Korea, Dalgona Coffee, a creamy coffee with instant coffee foam, is also a favorite.

Which coffee is drunk the most in the United States and Canada?

Known for its “Americano” coffee, which has a lower concentration than traditional Brazilian coffee, the United States and Canada have recently moved from the more diluted beverage of 5.5 g/100 ml to a concentration of between 6 and 6.5 g/100 ml, predominantly in the Northwest (Washington and Oregon) and the Northeast (New York and surrounding areas). However, espresso remains a favorite in the United States as well, being the favorite of many people in the Northeast and on the West Coast.
