Mayor Geovana Gessner (MDB), of Trombudo Central (SC), was admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) after complications from a diagnosis of thrombosis. At 39, the CEO of the Vale do Itajaí municipality underwent surgery and had her left leg amputated.

THE NSCTVA branch of TV Globo in Santa Catarina, the city of Trombudo Central, confirmed that the mayor has been hospitalized since last Friday, 20, in a hospital in the city of Rio do Sul, and is breathing with the help of equipment.
Geovana had been undergoing procedures throughout the year due to her medical condition, the city said. On Friday, she developed complications and was hospitalized.
In a medical bulletin released Tuesday evening, 24, the municipality stressed that Geovana has shown signs of improvement, but remains sedated and is hospitalized in intensive care. The tests are being performed so that the medical team can decide on the next steps for the mayor’s recovery.
Geovana is married and has a young daughter. The chief executive was re-elected to the post in the 2020 elections and is not running for office this year.
Removed from office, Geovana’s deputy, Hermelino Prada (MDB), took over as mayor of Trombudo Central.

According to Dr. Aline Lamaita, vascular surgeon and member of the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery, thrombosis usually manifests as pain in the leg, especially in the calf, associated with persistent swelling, heat, tenderness and redness.
“This will almost always lead to seeking medical help. In rarer cases, the clot can even break away from the wall of the vein and travel through the circulation to the lung, causing a pulmonary embolism that can also cause sudden death,” explains the specialist.
The doctor emphasizes that exercises are allies in the prevention of the clinical condition: “Any exercise that works the calf will help, so just the gesture of flexing and stretching the ankle will be significant. You can use a band on the toes as resistance and strength to stretch the feet. Circular movements with the ankle, hugging and stretching the legs and movements such as riding a bicycle can help if the person has the ability to perform them without pain or discomfort, daily”.
“For those who are not used to doing physical activity, the ideal is to start with a short time, 15-20 minutes, but daily, and increase it. Then try to do the activity, preferably always at the same time: do not wait for inspiration to come, get up and do it, as a matter of routine, think about how little time it takes: only 15 minutes”, concludes the doctor.
