Veterinarians provide guidance on disease prevention and protecting the home environment

Considered by many as children, pets are the joy of the house. But, to take care of their health and that of the humans who live in the house, it is necessary to worry about the presence of parasites.

Pets and Parasites: Some Precautions

Especially if the animal is a puppy, you have to be careful because it is more susceptible to contracting parasites and diseases. In general, deworming begins from the second week of life, being administered every 15 days. When there is clearly a worm infection, that is, if the animal presents characteristic symptoms, the owner must consult a veterinarian, who will diagnose the parasite. The diagnosis is made through clinical and parasitological tests. This makes the treatment more assertive and effective, with the choice of the correct drug.

Veterinarian Thais Matos, a trust and safety specialist at DogHero, a pet services company, explains that pet deworming products, for example, have both therapeutic and preventative functions.

“When the presence of parasites is diagnosed in the animal, to eliminate the problem, a dewormer is recommended that is suitable for the type of parasite and the symptoms caused. Deworming for the animal acts both in prevention and treatment. That is why it is important to know how and when to administer this medication, always paying attention to the doses and frequency prescribed by the professional”, advises Thaís.

Prevention

If deworming is done preventively, assuming the animal is healthy, it is necessary to follow the deworming protocol. “The weight must take into account the weight, breed, age, sex, risk of contamination and there may be differences in dosages from animal to animal,” he adds.

Another warning from the vet concerns fleas and ticks in dogs and cats, which proliferate quickly and are easily transmitted. In addition to infesting the environment, these parasites can cause allergies, severe itching and even transmit diseases.

“By being careful and preventing the control of these parasites, the owner protects his family. Before finding a flea or tick on the animal, it is possible to use products for this specific treatment. Some of these diseases can also be transmitted to humans, which is why it is important to protect pets to avoid contamination,” warns Thaís.

Fighting parasites

According to Jade Petronilho, veterinarian and content coordinator at Petlove, diseases caused by fleas and ticks can put your pet’s life at risk. The best way to prevent them is to follow a rigorous program with the use of specific antiparasitics for each species. “We have different product options available on the market, such as flea collars, pills, pipettes, sprays, among others. The choice must be made with the veterinarian who accompanies the animal, who will take into account the lifestyle, health status and age of the animal,” emphasizes Petronilho.

Jade also explains that flea collars are easy to use and some options also act as repellents, but they require special care. “Placed on the animal’s neck, they remain for months, usually without changing their action, even if for some reason they get wet. If the owner has more than one pet and they have a habit of playing by biting each other’s necks, this needs to be reconsidered, as some collars contain substances for the mouth.”

Another tip from the expert is to never leave a “leftover” flea collar hanging. “The products in the collar are not designed to be ingested and can cause accidental poisoning.” The father or mother of the animal should follow the manufacturer’s instructions and cut off the excess so that it fits snugly around the animal’s neck.
