The answer is yes, but it is necessary to take some precautions before and, above all, during the trip.

Are you on vacation and don’t want to leave your pet alone? Know that it is possible for your pet to accompany you, as long as you prepare and make sure it has everything it needs. Veterinarian Ozório Gonçalves, from the Hospital Veterinário Dr Oz, explains how to ensure all this before traveling.

Check-ups, updated vaccinations and safety in animal transport

“It is always advisable to do a general check-up, well in advance. The professional will request some routine tests and perform a clinical evaluation to ensure that the animal is in full health,” advises the professional. In addition to the check-up, the specialist emphasizes the importance of the dog or cat being up to date on vaccinations, especially the mandatory ones, such as the polyvalent vaccine (v8/v10 or v4/v5) and the anti-rabies vaccine. “If they are not up to date, he will apply them and recommend a suitable product to control internal and external parasites,” he explains.

If you are traveling by car, you need to make sure your pet is comfortable and safe throughout the trip. “For traveling in your own vehicle, we recommend rigid transport boxes, which are readily available on the pet market,” says Gonçalves. For traveling by plane or bus, he recommends consulting the transportation company beforehand. “Each company has its own requirements regarding the type of transport box and the size/weight of the box and the animal as a whole.”

Even your pet should be welcome

Another very important thing to consider when traveling with pets is choosing where you will be staying, as you need to make sure that the accommodation is suitable for you and your pet. “Check in advance whether the facility is pet friendly, whether there is an area reserved for keeping animals during the guests’ stay outside the facility, as well as any space and access restrictions for the animal upon arrival at the facility, as even when accepting pets in accommodation, facilities may have areas with reserved access for pets, such as feeding areas, swimming pools, etc.,” explains the veterinarian. “The ideal is for the animal to always have a collar and leash, as well as carry some means of identification that will allow the animal to be located in the event of loss, misplacement or any unforeseen event.”

Safety on the road and at your destination

Gonçalves also emphasizes that it is necessary to check the proximity of veterinary clinics and hospitals in the place where you will be staying, or along the route of the trip, since unforeseen events may arise. “And always remember that we should not treat your pet without the guidance or prescription of the responsible professional. Carrying the contact details of professionals you trust can help you a lot,” he adds.

Can I bring elderly animals or animals with particular pathologies with me?

According to the vet, yes, it is possible and the care is the same as for other pets. “If you are taking controlled or continuous medications, take enough for the trip there and back, as well as more in case of unforeseen events,” he advises. “It is also prudent to carry updated prescriptions for medications, in case you need to buy medications away from home,” concludes Gonçalves.
