Discover the foods that can damage your friend’s health

Dogs and cats need to maintain a balanced diet of nutrients, carbohydrates and vitamins so that they can stay healthy, growing strong and healthy. However, many owners end up adding foods to their pets’ routine that do not contribute to their nutritional health or that can even make them sick. Therefore, knowing what foods your best friend can consume and how to organize meals is essential to avoid illness and maintain well-being.

During meals, it is very common for pets to look at their owners as if they were asking for food on the table and, as a result, they end up receiving a small portion of the meal. But according to Maria Fernanda Cerutti, a veterinarian at the Pet de Todos clinic, this custom can be very harmful to the animal’s health: “There are condiments and types of foods that can harm them. Onions, for example, are toxic to pets. , which can cause poisoning and lead to death.”

Risk of allergic reactions with food

In addition to causing an inflammatory condition, there are foods that cause allergies in pets. Some are predisposed to food allergies, but due to the habit of their owners to share food, these allergies go unnoticed. Sweets are among the foods prohibited for dogs and cats, since the high sugar content can cause obesity in animals and, above all, as in the case of chocolate: the snack contains theobromine, a substance that has no effect on humans, can cause vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and even convulsions since it is toxic to animals.

Meat can be dangerous too

Because they are carnivorous animals, people tend to believe that dogs can eat any type of meat without any problems. Thus, on occasions such as barbecues and house parties, owners end up offering different meats and bones to their pets. But Maria Fernanda warns: “It is very common for people to end up giving them some type of food

pet, like grilled meat, but they should not. The meat is very fatty and causes poisoning

in the animal, causing vomiting and diarrhea.” Even snacks, always used to please pets, require the guardians’ attention in choosing, as some are inappropriate. “Guardians usually choose fruit as a snack option, but there are fruits that are toxic to animals, such as grapes,” explains the veterinarian.

Ready-made pet-friendly snacks are also a good option to please your pet. However, always read the packaging to know the ideal amount, based on the size of your pet.”

“The food is the perfect food for astronauts”

Many people believe that food and water alone are not enough for pets to have health and longevity. So much so that it is common for them to add food to food, thinking that they are ‘increasing’ the animal’s meal. However, without any prior consultation with the veterinarian or without knowledge of what certain foods can do to your pet, this attitude is risky.

“In the past, it was said that pets should eat the same food as humans, but this is a myth. The food is a complete food. I even say that the food is like astronaut food, since it is a complete capsule with everything the animal needs.”

In this sense, choosing the most appropriate food based on the size and age of your pet makes the difference for a balanced diet. “There are different types of food, and it is important that owners always look for, as much as possible, the super premium type, because it is already developed to meet the need for vitamins, proteins and carbohydrates. This type of food offers a better level of absorption than normal food, which reduces, for example, the volume of feces”, explains the professional.

Beyond food

Caring for animals also involves daily habits, such as establishing meal times and distributing the ideal amount of food. “It is important that people see the indication of the quantity on the food packaging to prevent obesity, and never leave food out. The ideal is to define feeding times to follow every day. After each meal, the ideal is to remove the bowl from the place where it usually eats, or leave it empty,” emphasizes the veterinarian.

Maintaining a daily routine prevents pets from feeling anxious and helps them understand the moments of each part of the day. “Animals love routine, having a schedule for eating, walking, playing and sleeping. Maintaining a routine has an impact on the balance of the animal’s health and also prevents anxiety. Cats, in particular, are stressed and can even develop diseases due to the lack of daily habits,” warns Maria Fernanda.

Veterinarian’s advice: natural snack as food

Some fruits and vegetables can be eaten by pets without causing any harm to their health and are an interesting option. Some examples are bananas, apples and carrots.

An interesting way to give carrots to pets is to make a stick like a vegetable and freeze some pieces as if they were ice cream. According to Maria Fernanda, in addition to being a vegetable that offers nutrients, carrots also help a lot to clean tartar and have a great texture.
