Many mothers are unable to breastfeed and must rely on formula for their babies.

Breastfeeding is essential, but when this is not possible, the use of formula milk is necessary, especially in the first year of the child’s life. According to Jocemara Gurmini, pediatric gastroenterologist and head of the Nutritional Support Service at Hospital Pequeno Príncipe, since whole cow’s milk is not recommended for children under 1 year old, mothers use formula milk.

These formulas must then follow the requirements of ANVISA (National Agency for Health Surveillance), which are:

  • Infant formula for infants

It is a product in liquid or powder form, used under medical prescription, specifically designed to meet, by itself, the nutritional needs of healthy newborns during the first 6 months of life. RDC n. 43/2011 (ANVISA).

  • Follow-up Infant Formula for Infants
  • It is the product, in liquid or powder form, indicated for healthy infants from the sixth month of life, up to twelve months of age (11 months and 29 days), constituting the main liquid element of a progressively diversified diet. RDC n. 44/2011 (ANVISA).

    The formulas are safe!

    Jocemara explains that infant formulas must follow the recommendations set by the Codex Ali-

    mentarius (a set of internationally adopted food standards) and that obtaining registration in the country depends on ANVISA. “Compared to whole cow’s milk, the formula supports the child’s growth, avoiding micronutrient deficiencies,” he emphasizes.

    Breast Milk and Formula: What Are the Similarities and Differences?

    From a nutritional point of view, the composition of the formula aims to support the growth and development of the baby. Although they are normally made with cow’s milk, changes are made to the composition, based on studies with breast milk. “Breast milk research always brings new developments and the industry tries to update the formulas. However, the main difference is the variation in the composition of BM (breast milk), depending on the stage of lactation (foremilk and hindmilk), routine breastfeeding, maternal nutritional status, mother’s diet and the age of the child.

    It is also worth highlighting the protective role of LM, with its wide variety of compounds that help the immune system”, explains the professional.

    Are there cases when mothers should avoid breastfeeding?

    YES! Jocemara explains that, in some cases, mothers cannot breastfeed, to avoid compromising the baby, and therefore the use of formula milk ends up being the best solution. The absolute contraindications are:

    • Newborn diagnosed with galactosemia (rare genetic disease, in which the mother is unable to

    metabolize galactose);

  • Mother with HIV;
  • Mother infected with HTLV I and I (human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I or type II);
  • Use of drugs incompatible with breastfeeding, such as antineoplastic drugs and radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Benefits of breast milk

    Despite the efforts of the industry, the composition and protective factor of breast milk cannot be surpassed. Pediatric gastroenterologist listed the benefits of LM.

    For Mom:

    • Less postpartum blood loss, with reduced maternal anemia;
    • Easier return to pre-pregnancy weight;
    • Contraceptive effect;
    • Zero cost;
    • Bond between mother and child;
    • Reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer;
    • Reduced risk of hypercholesterolemia and hypertension.
    • For the child:
    • Supply of immunological and enzymatic components;
    • Excellent nutritional composition;
    • Musculofacial development;
    • Cheap, convenient and easily digestible;
    • Prevents malnutrition and food deficiencies

    micronutrients;

  • Prevents food allergies;
  • Protection against acute diseases, such as diarrhea.
