The decision takes into account the existence of digital options that have the same functionality and are more sustainable
THE National Agency for Health Surveillance (Anvisa) the manufacture, import, sale and use in health services of thermometers and sphygmomanometers (blood pressure monitors) with a mercury column is prohibited.
The decision, published this week in Official Journal of the Unionconcerns equipment with a transparent column containing mercury and intended to measure body temperature and blood pressure. The ban does not apply to products for research, instrument calibration or use as reference standards.
According to Anvisa, the decision takes into account the existence of equipment with the same purpose, without the use of heavy metals.
“Digital thermometers and sphygmomanometers are very popular health products in Brazil and have the same clinical indications as those containing mercury. In addition, these devices have a precision that is mandatorily assessed by the Brazilian Conformity Assessment System and are more environmentally sustainable,” the agency explained to Agência Brasil.
In addition, deactivated equipment must follow the standards established by Anvisa for the management of waste from health servicesFailure to comply with the resolution will constitute a health violation, without prejudice to applicable civil, administrative and criminal responsibilities.
Global theme
Mercury does not pose a direct danger to users of thermometers or pressure gauges, but it is a dangerous toxic agent in the environment when disposed of.
The ministry had already spoken out against equipment containing the metal in 2022, when it approved a regulatory initiative on the subject in line with the Minamata Convention. The international treaty, of which Brazil is a signatory, aims to reduce the use of mercury in products and processes worldwide. *With information from Agência Brasil
