Tinnitus and vertigo: the disease caused Adriane Galisteu to lose 60% of her hearing

The condition is called otosclerosis, and treatment may include surgery to replace one of the tiny bones in the middle ear.

Summary

Presenter Adriane Galisteu revealed that she suffers from the disease otosclerosis, which causes hearing loss. ENT doctor Nathália Prudencia clarified the causes, symptoms and treatments of the disease.

The host of the program “A Fazenda”, on TV Record, Adriane Galisteu revealed in an interview with the podcast Podcringe that she suffers from a disease called otosclerosis, responsible for her 60% hearing loss.

“I have much less hearing. It is a horrible disease and I do not know where it comes from, I am looking for a doctor who can be an expert in the matter to talk about it because there is no cure and I do not know of any cure,” the artist said on the program.

According to Nathália Prudencio, an otolaryngologist, specialist in vertigo and tinnitus, otosclerosis is a disease defined by the bony remodeling of the otic capsule, a bony structure that surrounds and protects the labyrinth.

“Its cause has not yet been established, but studies suggest several hypotheses: including genetic, hormonal and viral factors. It affects women two to three times more often than men, especially those of childbearing age, and despite the hypothesis of a hormonal influence on otosclerosis, there is still controversy over whether it worsens during pregnancy,” explains the doctor. “It is important to emphasize that otosclerosis is not an autoimmune disease: it is only a hypothesis, but without any proof.”

According to the doctor, patients with otosclerosis will experience progressive hearing loss, usually bilateral conductive, and may therefore report difficulty understanding speech and the need to increase the volume of electronic devices. “Furthermore, they may experience ringing in the ear and, in more advanced cases, the patient may experience dizziness,” explains the specialist.

There is no specific cure for otosclerosis, according to the doctor. “Patients should be as careful as other patients with hearing loss, namely avoiding exposure to other factors that can worsen hearing loss, such as noise exposure and the use of ototoxic medications,” the specialist explains.

“Treatment of otosclerosis may include a surgical procedure called a stapedotomy, depending on the medical evaluation. In the surgical procedure, one of the small bones in the middle ear, the stapes, responsible for conducting sound, is replaced. In otosclerosis, this small bone becomes more rigid, thus compromising the correct transmission of sound,” explains the doctor. “This procedure may also be indicated in cases of mild or moderate hearing loss.”

The second treatment option is the use of a sound amplification device to correct the patient’s hearing loss. “And in cases of advanced hearing loss, cochlear implants may be recommended,” he adds.

Nathália Prudência says that the most important measure is to have a correct diagnosis. “Therefore, when faced with hearing symptoms such as difficulty hearing or ringing in the ear, especially if the patient already has a family history of hearing loss, it is advisable to consult a doctor as soon as possible,” she concludes.
