He had already ventured into the subject in The Terminatorand now James Cameron has embarked on the world of artificial intelligence once and for all. And no, it wasn’t in another of his fantastical productions: the director is the newest member of the board of directors of Stability AI, creator of Stable Diffusion.
THE announcement was made yesterday (24) by the company and, in the statement, CEO Prem Akkaraju said that Cameron “lives in the future and hopes the rest of us will catch up with it”. The director believes that “the intersection of generative AI and CGI image-making” will help “unlock new ways for artists to tell stories in ways we never could have imagined”.
James Cameron had already been criticized for his use of artificial intelligence
Since last year, Cameron has been criticized for using artificial intelligence in the remastering of some of his films, such as Real lies. And it is worth remembering that the director had also underlined his concerns about technology in an interview CTV Newsstating that he believes that “with artificial intelligence we will enter the equivalent of a nuclear arms race.”
At the same time, Stability has faced lawsuits over its training of models based on copyrighted content. Last year, regulation of AI in the industry was a major issue behind the Hollywood actors and writers strike.
But James isn’t the only one involved in implementing AI in film: a few months ago, Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra revealed that the company should embrace the technology as a way to reduce production costs. Additionally, Lionsgate and Runway recently partnered to create a generative AI model.
