In Brazil, vegetarians have to celebrate only with numbers […]
This Tuesday, October 1st, we celebrate World Vegetarian Day. And here in Brazil we just have to celebrate.
According to a survey carried out by Veganuary, a global organization that promotes veganism, and Happycow, an application for finding vegan places in more than 180 countries, Brazil is the most vegan country in Latin America, followed by Mexico, Colombia, Chile and Argentina. .
The top position is due to the growth in the number of restaurants that have added vegan options to their menus. However, Mexico leads the list with the most fully vegan restaurants (740), followed by Brazil (609) and Colombia (208).
Of the more than 10,800 venues with vegan options, Brazil is home to 28.99%, but as of 2023 it is almost on par with Mexico, at 28.96%. This is followed by Colombia (11.43%), Chile (8.73%) and Argentina (8.44%).
“Brazil has proven to be very democratic in this sense: restaurants not specializing in vegan cuisine have made an effort to include this offer and, thus, transform the already consolidated consumer movement into a commercial strategy”, analyzes Fernanda Morena in a note, director of Veganuary in Brazil.
The most vegan cities, according to the 2023 ranking, are: Sao Paulo, with 671 places of this type, followed by Mexico City (502), Santiago (450), Bogotá (397), Buenos Aires (395), Rio de Janeiro (291), Lima (251), Brasilia (212), Porto Alegre (168) and Medellín (168).
