Crohn’s disease: discover the pathology that made Evaristo Costa lose 22 kg in 3 weeks

Even if there is no cure, with some precautions and carrying out the treatment correctly, it is possible to live peacefully; see the symptoms

Journalist Evaristo Costa, 48, was shocked when he revealed in a podcast that he had lost 22kg in just over three weeks due to Crohn’s disease, which he had been suffering from since 2021. In July, the same disease killed Adrián Olivares, former member of the Menudo group, also 48 years old. The artist did not survive complications from surgery to relieve his symptoms and died just a week after discovering the disease. In January this year, Evaristo was admitted to intensive care due to his condition.

Crohn’s disease is a serious gastrointestinal syndrome affecting the walls of the intestine, of unknown origin. According to the Brazilian Association for Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease (ABCD), the disease mainly affects the lower part of the small intestine and the large intestine (colon).

“There is no specific cause, nor a bacterial infection, it is an immunogenic and immune-mediated disease. It is as if it were an autoinflammation process” explains Dr. Henrique Perobelli, digestive system surgeon and coloproctologist.

According to the doctor told Terra Você in a 2023 article, the process of autoinflammation can cause a number of complications in the body, such as abdominal pain, weight loss, weight loss, and more serious symptoms such as intestinal bleeding.

Although the condition has stabilized for a while, Evaristo said he has been experiencing a new flare-up for about a year, with symptoms that are intensifying. He said he weighed 99kg due to the use of corticosteroids, which caused swelling, but unfortunately the treatment had no effect.

“Inside I’m totally out of control,” she said of her battle with the disease, which has affected both her health and her appearance. “Every day I feel like I’m wasting away (…) the food doesn’t stop inside me,” Evaristo said.

Research shows that the risk of developing the disease is the same for men and women. The condition usually manifests itself before the age of 30.

5 habits to lose weight healthily

Good nutrition is essential

Even if there is no cure, with a little attention and carrying out the treatment correctly, it is possible to live peacefully. According to Dr. Perobelli, careful nutrition is one of the main needs for those who find themselves facing problems related to Crohn’s disease.

“A diet, predominantly of organic origin and healthy, is the main recommendation for patients suffering from Crohn’s disease. Processed, ultra-processed foods, inorganic foods, fast foods, meat and proteins of animal origin they are not recommended for this type of patient,” says the doctor.

Other activities can also relieve symptoms:

  • Practicing physical activities;
  • Avoid relying on diet or treatment advice found on the Internet;
  • Check your weight;
  • Identify foods that are not good for you and avoid eating them;
  • Avoid stressful situations or strong emotional upheavals;
  • Follow the guidance of specialized professionals (nutritionists, doctors, etc.).

Another common feature of Crohn’s disease is that patients experience severe attacks of pain and then periods of remission, without any symptoms. Therefore, it is important to consult your doctor at the slightest suspicion of complications.
