Is there a difference between toothpastes? Find out how to choose the best

Knowing how to choose the best toothpaste among those on the market can help avoid problems such as tooth decay and tartar.

THE toothpaste it is a daily use product which, in addition to cleaning the teeth, also prevents various problems, such as cavities and tartar. In other words, it is extremely important to always choose the best option among those available on the market in order to take advantage of all these advantages.

However, it’s sometimes difficult to know how to choose, considering the number of brands and types of toothpaste out there. Each has specific resources for certain treatments, and one may achieve your goals better than another.

Thus, the doctor and teacher of the Dentistry course at the Santo Amaro University (Unisa), Raquel Lopes Gaona, explains the differences between the products and how to choose the best toothpaste to clean your teeth:

Advice on how to choose toothpaste

According to the doctor, fluoride toothpastes prevent tooth decay, as well as favor some health conditions, such as gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums; xerostomia; and mucositis. Therefore, they are usually the best choice. Remembering that the amount of fluoride must be between 1000 and 1500 (ppm) to prevent tooth decay.

Furthermore, the doctor asks for your attention to check whether the product is authorized by the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). This is because the Agency regulates, among other variables, the degree of abrasiveness of the products (RDA), which if exceeded what is allowed can cause permanent wear of the teeth, sensitivity and yellowing due to the exposure of the dentin, the tissue found at the below the enamel.

In the case of children, it is also advisable to use fluoride toothpastes from the first tooth onwards, but pay attention to the quantities. “For children from zero to two years old, the recommended quantity is half a grain of Cruz rice; between two and four years old, the quantity of one grain of Cruz rice, and from six years old, one grain of peas”, underlines the ‘teacher.

It is worth remembering that patients should visit the dentist regularly, at least once a year. And during this oral health maintenance consultation, each patient should be prescribed the appropriate oral care product.

Be careful with homemade products

Raquel points out that, especially nowadays, with the Internet, it is necessary to be careful when recommending recipes with few homemade ingredients to remove stains from teeth. “This has been a common and recurring mistake among patients. Most homemade products used to whiten teeth are very abrasive,” says the professor.

Contrary to popular belief, they cause wear of the tooth enamel, which is its outer protective layer. According to the expert, without this protective layer, the dentin tissue is exposed and the yellowish color of the teeth becomes more evident.

Using homemade products can lead to hypersensitivity in the teeth, causing pain due to exposure to the abrasive effects of homemade products, which also have a low pH.
