Pink October exists to raise awareness about early detection of breast cancer. This is because the disease is the leading cause of cancer death among Brazilian women.
According to Dr. José Roberto Fraga Filho, breast cancer does not have just one risk factor. However, women over 50 have a higher chance.
Therefore all women, starting from the age of 20, should carry out self-examination monthly. In fact, it is not enough to feel the breasts on a normal day, the ideal should be between the fourth and sixth day after the end of the menstrual flow. Women who are not menstruating, however, should watch for other signs, such as lumps in the breast or armpit, changes in the skin, or nipple discharge.
During breast cancer treatment, dryness or burning may occur. “Both chemotherapy and radiotherapy lead to dryness of the skin. Therefore, the patient requires more vigorous hydration, through the intake of 2-3 liters of water per day. In addition to topical hydration through moisturizing creams and oils. And, finally, prevent the skin from dehydration due to long, hot baths,” explains Dr. Fraga.
