Specialist Acássio Barreto explains that the problem, which also affects President Lula, overloads some joints

According to the orthopedist Acassius Barretus (CRM-RJ 52.90070-2 and EQR 4568), the bursitis it is an inflammation of the bursae, small fluid-filled sacs that act as shock absorbers between the bones, muscles and tendons of the joints. These structures have the essential function of reducing friction and facilitating smooth joint movement. When inflammation occurs, the affected area becomes painful and limits movement.

The president Lulafor example, he complained of pain caused by bursitis in both his shoulder and knee. According to the doctor, although the problem affects several joints, such as knees, hips, elbows and ankles, the shoulders are the most affected. He explains that this happens because the shoulder is a joint with a wide range of motion, constantly used in daily activities. “Repetitive movements or overload of this joint, such as intense physical activity or work, end up promoting inflammation of the bursae in the region,” he points out.

Causes and symptoms

Acássio points out that the causes of bursitis are diverse and include repetitive movements, joint overload, traumatic injuries and even conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. The most common symptoms include localized pain, swelling and difficulty moving the affected joint. In the case of the shoulder, for example, many patients report difficulty lifting their arm or performing simple tasks, such as putting on a shirt or unfastening a bra.

Prevention and treatment

The specialist reminds us that to avoid bursitis, some preventive measures can be taken. He emphasizes that it is essential to avoid repetitive movements that overload the joints. If this is not possible, as in the case of professional activities, it is important to take regular breaks and strengthen the muscles around the joint with specific exercises.

When bursitis is already present, treatment varies depending on the severity of the case. In milder situations, it may be sufficient to rest the joint and take anti-inflammatories. In more serious cases it may be necessary to resort to physiotherapy or, in extreme situations, procedures such as corticosteroid infiltrations or even surgery. “Early diagnosis and patient adherence to the proposed treatment are fundamental to the success of the treatment,” emphasizes Acássio.
