Cantina Castelões is located in Brás and has just turned 100 years old
With 100 years of tradition in the preparation of artisanal pasta, Cantina Castelões, in Brás, is the oldest pizzeria in São Paulo and has been using the same recipe for all these years. Of Italian origins, Vicente Donato opened the restaurant in 1924 at just 18 years old with his friend Ettore Siniscalchi. He spent nearly 70 years working. His son, João Donato, continued the business for almost 60 years and currently the owner is Fábio Donato, Vicente’s nephew.
“For them it was more than a business, they certainly loved both here. It’s the care in selecting the ingredient, in talking to the producer, in choosing the partners, the suppliers. I inherited it from my grandfather and it’s still there with us So the cure On both sides, this commitment to do is ours and this motivates us to arrive and carry on the legacy”, said Fábio on Cantina Castelões’ Instagram.
How much does it cost to eat in the oldest pizzeria in Sao Paulo?
Taste tell it all! Prices range from R$98 (mozzarella) to R$136 (Roman, four cheese and Portuguese) for a pizza with naturally fermented dough, measuring 27cm.
The house pizza, Castelões, also costs R$136 and is made with special mozzarella, fresh tomato sauce topped with slices of peppers. The restaurant also offers flavours: Neapolitan (R$ 108), garlic and oil (R$ 108), tuna (R$ 118), provolone (R$ 122), endive (R$ 102), hearts of palm (R$ 126 ), among other options.
