The trade deficit in the pharmaceutical sector is a challenge for Brazil, says the director of the BNDES

The healthcare sector currently represents 10% of the country’s GDP; sector has sought investment in the bank’s innovation agenda

Although the healthcare sector accounts for 10% of gross domestic product (GDP), the area’s development depends on the country’s ability to reverse the $10 billion trade deficit in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical sector.

This was stated by the director of Productive Development, Innovation and Foreign Trade of the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), José Luis Gordon, one of the speakers at the conference Health and Wellness Summit From Estadaowhich will take place this Monday 14th in Sao Paulo. “We want an innovative pharmaceutical industry. We will innovate in generic drugs, but also in disruptive technologies.”

According to Gordon, this movement has already happened. Over the past two years, he says, the healthcare sector has been the most sought after investment within the BNDES innovation agenda. “It was R$6 billion, the largest financing in the history of BNDES in the sector.”

The goal is to support a “more digital, more innovative and greener industry, which uses Brazilian diversity to develop new medicines.” A movement that also involves hospitals, health services and the machinery and equipment industry.

Gordon cited three BNDES strategies already targeting the segment. One of these is SUS Suppliers, which consists of a credit associated with the aim of supplying SUS with healthcare devices produced in the country. “It’s an agile, non-bureaucratic system, with rapid funding.”

The launch of a fund for so-called deep tech, i.e. startups based on scientific research, is also expected at the beginning of 2025. “This niche has now reached maturity.”

Finally, BNDES will be the financial agent of the Investment Fund (Fiis), an instrument that will finance equipment and services in the sectors of basic education, healthcare and public safety.

“Healthcare is at the center of the economy of the future. We therefore want an increasingly strong and competitive sector, and this is the role of the BNDES”, he concluded.
