A pill that simulates the benefits of physical exercise
While it’s no substitute for a workout that leaves you sweaty and full of endorphins, scientists are making progress in creating drugs that mimic the effects of exercise.
In 2020, a group of researchers from University of California, San Franciscomade a promising discovery: they observed that, after exercise, mice produced a protein called Gpld1. This protein, present in high levels in the blood of rodents, has been associated with improved cognitive function, especially in older mice. Most interestingly, this same enzyme has been identified in humans who exercise regularly.
