On the occasion of World Breast Cancer Day, read Débora Pieretti’s story: ‘Being sad and depressed interferes with the immune system’
The journey of Débora Pieretti, 54 years old, is a true story of overcoming and transformation. Born in Sao Paulo and web designer, his life changed radically in October 2015, when, during routine exams at Pink Octobershe was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“I didn’t feel anything, no discomfort,” he recalls in an exclusive report to Earth you.
However, what started as a routine exam soon turned into a series of challenges: surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Débora saw her life turn upside down and one of the most difficult moments was losing her hair.
I saw hair everywhere… it looked like I was falling apart.

Débora’s support network was fundamental during the treatment. His son Vitor, then 19, was by his side, even though fear and uncertainty were present. “He looked at me with fear… without knowing what would happen,” he says.
However, her 23-year marriage to her ex-husband did not survive treatment, as happened to Preta Gil and many other female cancer victims. The betrayal, abandonment and separation were painful, but, little by little, Débora realized that that chapter of her life had closed. “Today I understand that it was a liberation,” he says with good humor.

A year after the separation, Débora meets Cesar in a club. They married in the church on May 24 this year, a dream neither of them had achieved in their previous relationships.

However, the turning point in the São Paulo native’s life began before her wedding, in February 2016. During an event for cancer patients, Débora received a wig. At that moment, as the hairdresser fixed her bangs, she felt something that would change the course of her life.
“I was very moved. And I thought: when I get better, I want other women to have this opportunity, to be able to feel what I felt in that moment.”

In September 2016 Débora began to actively work for the self-esteem of women facing chemotherapy treatment. And this is how, on March 8, 2017, he founded the Instituto Amor em Mechas.
The NGO began with the mission of providing emotional health to women undergoing cancer treatment by offering free wigs. The “Love in Locks Urns”, distributed in beauty salons, facilitate the donation of locks of hair, with the monthly goal of collecting one kilo of locks per urn. The impact of this work goes far beyond aesthetics.
“Being sad and depressed interferes with the immune system,” reflects Débora. Therefore, in addition to providing wigs, the Institute is also dedicated to bringing joy and increasing the self-esteem of its beneficiaries.
We want these women, during the most delicate phase of chemotherapy, to feel beautiful and feminine.
