With the beginning of the marketing of the first weight loss pens produced in Brazil, such as oil and lirux, by the pharmacist EMS-, medicines based on LPG-1 analogues have returned to the center of the public debate. These drugs, which already include widely known options such as Ozepic, Saxenda, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Victza, have gained popularity in the fight against obesity. Now, with the entry of national versions on the market, the theme rekindles the discussions on access, regulation and, in particular, the conscious and attentive use of these substances.

Since June 2025, a new standard Anvisa has requested the preservation of the prescription for the dispensation of these drugs. The measure was motivated by the growth of the indiscriminate use of the LPG-1 agonists such as traffic lights, liraglutide, tipatid, among others used only with aesthetic focus, without an adequate clinical evaluation.

“What should be a therapeutic resource for specific and well-evaluated cases has become a promise of rapid and effortless loss of weight, which is a dangerous error”, warns Patricia Torres, a supplementary iPatinga doctor and a post-graduate degree in Nutrology at the Brazil Association of Nutrology (Abran).

“These drugs can be precious allies, but their use must be anchored in a personalized therapeutic plan that respects the complexity of obesity”.

According to National Health Survey, over 60% of the Brazilian population lives with overweight. For these cases, the pens are formally indicated in obesity (BMI above 30) or overweight with associated comorbidity such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes or night apnea. However, according to the doctor, it is not uncommon to find patients who begin use without prescription, without exams and without following, putting health at risk.

Beyond the weight: supplementary medicine and conscious use of pens

In practice, the pens for weight loss act by promoting satiety, slowing down gastric emptying and reducing appetite – which, combined with other strategies, can favor weight loss. “The action of these molecules in the center of appetite is well documented, but it is a mistake to believe that this solves the problem itself. The body adapts. Therefore, the use must be accompanied by true changes in lifestyle: regulated nutrition, sleep routine, emotional support and regular physical activity”, explains Patricia.

The supplementary functional medicine evaluates multiple variables that can influence weight gain: intestinal health, hormonal imbalances, sleep quality, nutritional deficiencies and impact of chronic stress. “Only with this expanded listening can we prescribe responsibly. It is common for the patient to have hidden factors that make weight loss difficult and even contraindicate the use of injectable,” he says.

In addition, recent tests warn the bounce effect risk. A destination -analysis of 2025 by the revisions of obesity, with over 2,300 patients, showed that about 50% of users increase in weight after suspension of treatment. On average, liraglutide users recovered 2.2 kg, while those who used semaglutado or tirzepatida gained up to 9.7 kg.

“These data must be discussed with patients. The objective of processing is not only to lose weight temporarily, but to reprogram the body to support a new metabolic balance. It is here that supplementary medicine comes into play, with a proposal for real transformation, based on individuality and lasting habits”, concludes the doctor.
