7 dimensions of well-being for a healthy working environment

Carine Roos explains how you can work on emotional, social and creative areas in the corporate world

Is your company attentive to the well-being of its employees? A survey conducted by Wellhub reveals that 93% of today’s workforce considers well-being to be as important as salary, and 87% say they would leave a company that didn’t prioritize this issue. Therefore, organizations must adopt a series of measures that take into account all the dimensions and particularities of their teams, creating a psychologically safe environment, in which emotions and needs are taken into consideration, through active listening and humanized leadership .

“When we talk about well-being we are referring to the balance between multiple areas, which directly impact both personal and professional life. If any of these are neglected, overall health can worsen, affecting motivation, performance and job satisfaction. We will not always be able to feel good in all aspects, but it is important to have an overall vision and take into account that for each individual the pendulum can swing more to one side”, comments Carine Roos, specialist in the creation of humanized and corporate environments. CEO of Newa, a social impact consultancy.

Also explore how to work on these 7 dimensions of well-being in the corporate environment:

1. Physical well-being

Probably the best known, physical well-being, involves three main pillars: sleep, nutrition and physical activity.

“Doing physical activity regularly is important, but it is not enough if there is not a balanced diet and adequate rest. Companies can offer initiatives such as workplace exercise, group sports activities, gym vouchers, nutritional support, ergonomic improvements and programs to help stop smoking,” explains Carine.

2. Emotional well-being

This takes care of psychological aspects, allowing people to enjoy life, overcome obstacles with resilience and manage their emotions in a healthy way, preventing disorders such as burnout, anxiety and depression. According to the ISMA-BR (International Stress Management Association), 72% of Brazilians feel stressed at work and 32% suffer from burnout syndrome.

3. Financial well-being

This aspect is more related to satisfaction with the employee’s financial situation than to the volume of money itself, and includes the ability to manage and increase resources efficiently.

“Investing in team financial education can make a big difference, especially in the most vulnerable groups, such as black women and the LGBTQIAPN+ community,” says the expert.

According to research conducted by the fintech Onze in collaboration with the insurance company Icatu, seven out of ten Brazilians say that financial problems affect their emotional health. Of those surveyed, 59% don’t have an emergency financial reserve, 41% say their income doesn’t cover all of their monthly expenses, and 54% say their biggest current concern is money, in addition to topics like family (17%), health (13%) and work (8%).

4. Wellbeing at work

It is related to job satisfaction, career enthusiasm, and professional fulfillment, as well as satisfaction with pay, benefits, and the values promoted by the organization. “We don’t always get the job of our dreams, and that’s normal. The important thing is to understand what really matters to us and, for companies, to constantly evaluate the organizational climate, proposing actions that improve the needs of employees”, highlights Roos.

5. Social assistance

It involves interpersonal relationships, professional connections and the feeling of belonging to a group.

“Having balanced social well-being means having a good support system, whether from friends, family or work colleagues. Companies can promote team building activities, especially in remote or hybrid work models, to strengthen these connections,” suggests the expert.

6. Cultural well-being

This dimension values cultural differences, covering religion, race, age and gender identity. “Investing in diversity training demonstrates organizations’ commitment to inclusion and ensures long-term growth and success,” Roos emphasizes.

Those who promote diversity are more successful at engaging their employees, research from Learning Rocks shows, as diversity-related topics are among the three most searched for by leaders of more than 1,400 client companies, with high levels of satisfaction.

7. Creative well-being

It refers to the ability to use knowledge and creative processes to find solutions and innovate. “Organizations that encourage creativity in a psychologically safe and healthy environment allow people to feel more comfortable exploring diversity of thought, culture and art, expressing their ideas and creating new things. This is the basis of innovation”, concludes the Newa CEO.
