Standing for a long time can increase the risk of circulatory diseases

Unlike what many – and even scientists – thought until then, research has shown that staying away from the chair for a long period of time is not healthy at all.

Contrary to what many – and even scientists – thought until then, research has shown that standing for long periods of time is not healthy at all. Find out what searches have been performed by University of SydneyIn Australia:

The study

The study, published in International Journal of Epidemiology (International Journal of Epidemiologyin literal translation), analyzed more than 83 thousand people over the course of seven years United Kingdom. The researchers carried out the monitoring using each person’s smart watches.

The results showed that standing for a long time can increase the risk of developing circulatory diseases and is as dangerous as spending a long time in a chair. “The main conclusion is that standing for a long time does not compensate for a sedentary lifestyle and may be risky for some people in terms of circulatory health. We found that standing longer does not improve long-term cardiovascular health and increases the risk of circulatory problems”explained the research manager Matthew N. Ahmadi.

Exercise routine

Research has also shown that the best thing to do is maintain a daily routine of at least six minutes of more intense exercise or 30 minutes of moderate exercise. This also applies to those people who spend more than 11 hours a day in a highly sedentary manner.

Same risk as smoking

If your routine requires you to spend a lot of time sitting, know that it could put your health at risk as much as that of smokers. According to the Dr. Caio Focassiovascular surgeon, this is because our body does not always have to be static. Furthermore, a sedentary lifestyle makes venous return difficult, as well as reducing daily calorie expenditure.

The specialist also explains that the position hinders the return of blood to the heart. This leads to the appearance of edema in the lower limbs and even varicose veins. “It is a common symptom to feel heaviness and tiredness in the legs due to this difficulty in venous return”reports.
