Euthanasia is a medical procedure that aims to intentionally cause the death of a patient, usually in the case of terminal illness or incurable conditions, with the aim of alleviating suffering. The practice can be carried out by a healthcare worker, who administers lethal drugs, or, in some contexts, through assisted suicide, where the patient takes the initiative to ingest the lethal substance.
It is important to note that although the terms euthanasia and assisted suicide are often used interchangeably, they have significant differences in terms of execution and responsibility.
The legality of euthanasia varies widely around the world. In countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain, Portugal and New Zealand, the practice is legalized under specific conditions. Belgium, for example, has one of the most permissive legislation, allowing euthanasia in cases of psychiatric illness without age limits since 2014. In Canada, euthanasia is legal for terminally ill adults whose death is considered “reasonably foreseeable ”. Colombia also legalized the practice through a Constitutional Court decision in 2014.
In Switzerland, although active euthanasia is not allowed, assisted suicide is legal and attracts people from other countries to undergo the procedure. This has generated the phenomenon known as “death tourism”. In contrast, countries such as Brazil ban both euthanasia and assisted suicide, considering them crimes under the penal code. However, there is an ongoing discussion about the possibility of regulating orthothanasia, which would allow the suspension of treatments in terminally ill patients.
Other countries where euthanasia or assisted suicide are permitted include Australia (in some regions), Cuba (recently legalized), Germany (where only assisted suicide is permitted), and parts of the United States such as Oregon and California. In contrast, countries such as Chile and Denmark are still debating whether to legalize the practice.
The discussion on euthanasia continues to be a controversial topic in many societies, involving ethical, moral and legal issues that reflect different views on the right to life and a dignified death.
