The appeal came after an official statement from Neal’s Yard Dairy that it was the victim of “a robbery”. The scammers posed as wholesale distributors for a large French retailer to steal the food.
Oliver described the robbery as “a daring robbery of shocking proportions”. He asked his Instagram followers to be careful if they hear about “truck loads of very fine cheeses” being offered “at low prices”.
The robbery
Last Monday, the 21st, Neal’s Yard Dairy sent the shipment thinking that the buyers were part of a legitimate wholesale distributor in France. The shipment delivered to the scammers amounted to 950 wheels of cheddar cheese from popular brands such as Hafod, Westcombe and Pitchfork.
The company, a leading distributor and seller of British artisan cheeses in the UK, said it is working with law enforcement to identify the perpetrators of this fraud.
The cheesemaker is urging cheese traders around the world to get in touch if they suspect cheeses, particularly cloth-wrapped cheddars in 10 or 24 kilo sizes, with the labels removed, have been stolen.
