The vegetable is used to decorate homes and Halloween parties
The pumpkin is one of the most traditional symbols of Halloween and is used to decorate homes and parties after being carved into the shapes of scary faces in the United States and several countries that celebrate Halloween, including Brazil, where the popularity of the data grows every year.
In the United States, pumpkin is used to decorate holidays and its filling is also used in the famous pie: “pumpkin pie” is traditional and prepared during the country’s festivals.
How did the pumpkin tradition come about on Halloween?
According to an Irish legend, a man called Sting Jack met the devil and invited him for a drink and, when it was time to pay the bill, he offered his soul, since he had no money. The devil transformed himself into a coin, but the man did not comply and kept the coin in his pocket with a cross so that it remained stuck in that form.
When Jack died, St. Peter prevented him from entering Heaven and he couldn’t even enter Hell because he deceived the devil twice. He then wandered the Earth like a banshee, carrying in his hands a turnip and an ember that he had received as a gift from the Devil.
This Jack in the Lantern legend spans generations and has become a tradition in Halloween celebrations, the pumpkin harvest season in the United States.
The belief is that, because of their abundance and because they were easier to carve, people began using pumpkins instead of roots, and lanterns with scary faces and lights began to be used to scare away evil spirits. The pumpkin also represents fertility and wisdom.
