The nutritionist reveals how fruit can be important for the proper functioning of the body
It’s no secret that fruit is rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants. And among the benefits of apples, which are among the most appreciated in Brazil and in the world, there is nothing different. By consuming one unit a day it is now possible to protect yourself from some diseases.
According to Dr. Valéria Goulart, nutritionist at the Brazilian Association of Nutrology (ABRAN), American studies indicate that, among the benefits of apples, there is a reduction in the incidence of type 2 diabetes, due to the fact that it contains antioxidants.
According to the expert, apples contain polyphenols, substances that protect the heart and prevent cardiovascular diseases. It contains a fiber called pectin, which reduces the absorption of fats ingested daily and, consequently, helps fight bad cholesterol.
Fruit is an ally of health
“The apple is able to relieve stomach pain, helps fight gastritis because it works like a gel. This fruit increases the production of acetylcholine (neurotransmitter responsible for memory) and, therefore, reduces the individual’s chances of triggering the ‘Alzheimer’s or stroke,’ says the doctor, after being asked about the benefits of apples.
“Polyphenols also act as anti-inflammatories and reduce the risk of cancer, especially in the digestive area. Another function is to fight free radicals, those that slow down aging. Furthermore, it promotes the production of collagen, helping oral health , malic acid which increases saliva production, reducing the proliferation of bacteria, which form bacterial plaque”, explains Dr. Goulart.
According to a study conducted at the US National Institute, eating an apple a day prevents several diseases. This study was conducted on more than 8 thousand people. For a year about 10% ate an apple a day. These people didn’t need to take many drugs, they didn’t get sick and an apple a day gives more energy and resistance, because despite being low in calories it contains carbohydrates and fibre.
The nutritionist also points out that the best time to enjoy the benefits of apples is breakfast, due to the pectin present in their peel. This substance slows down digestion and reduces the absorption of sugars into the body, which means that the intestines function healthily. Some people, when they eat an apple at night, experience some discomfort, especially in digestion, due to the peel.
Losing weight is one of the benefits of apples
“Being a fruit rich in fiber and water, it causes a sense of satiety and reduces appetite. It has pectin in the peel which reduces the absorption of sugars, and this is excellent for those who want to lose weight. Furthermore, those who eat an apple 15 minutes before meals consume 200 fewer calories (the apple even makes you lose weight).
Ways of consuming
“Here in Brazil the Gala apple is the one that everyone consumes and loves, one of the advantages is that it has many antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory priorities. The Argentine apple (very red) helps digestion even more. The Fuji apple is excellent for making sweets The green apple is wonderful, it is rich in flavonoids, vitamin C, antioxidants, few calories and lots of fibre, in short it is delicious.
Those who are not a fan of this fruit can consume it in another format, for example by adding a little cinnamon and heating it in the microwave. Besides being tasty, cinnamon has all the health benefits and reduces some of the apple’s acidity.
Cinnamon is a good complement to the benefits of apples
The combination of cinnamon and apple also reduces appetite. You can cut it in half on a plate on top of baking paper, leave it for 4-5 minutes, until it becomes dry, like chips. Then, when the edges start to turn, you can turn it over and let it rest for another 30 seconds, until it becomes very crispy. Then just sprinkle it with cinnamon and let it dry.
“Apple tea with cinnamon is also good for your health, especially when it is already overcooked and you don’t want to waste it. One tip is to cut it into ice cubes and let it freeze, as once defrosted you can turn it into a drink. .”
“It is worth blending the fruit in the blender with water to drink the ice cream. Or, if you prefer it hot, just heat it up and drink the drink. In addition to bringing health benefits, the body will be supplied with nutrients,” he concludes the expert.
