Consumption has grown compared to last year and the types vary greatly, but experts warn about the effectiveness and real need for such products
In recent years the use of supplements has increased significantly, even among younger people, as part of a healthy routine. In the first half of 2024, the consumption of food and vitamin supplements increased by 2.1% compared to the same period of the previous year. In June, consumption grew by 11.9% compared to the same month in 2023, according to calculations carried out by Websetorial, in an economic bulletin drawn up by the Brazilian Association of the Food Industry for Special and Similar Uses (ABIAD).
Capsules for nails, hair, vitamins, collagen, all this is part of the new fitness and wellness lifestyle trend. However, it is necessary to question fashion and ask ourselves: are these products safe? Effective? Really necessary? Researchers and experts say it depends.

Factors such as access to information through social media and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic have led many people to look for ways to strengthen their immune systems and improve their overall health. This culture of prevention has generated a growing demand for products that promise quick and effective results.
“This trend came from postmodernity, where people started to work more and have less time to eat correctly and naturally, and then the industry took advantage of it”, underlines Sabrina Franco, nutritionist at the Faculdade FMU, specialist in eating disorders, obesity and bariatric surgery.
It is important to point out that many products available on the market do not have scientific evidence. A 2023 study indicated that approximately 40% of supplements sold may not contain the ingredients listed on the label, according to Pieter Cohen, a clinical researcher at the Cambridge Health Alliance and Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, Massachusetts (USA).
“If you don’t have a properly functioning microbiota, you won’t be able to absorb vitamins and minerals effectively. Additionally, many supplements sold in pharmacies are sold in minute quantities that, in fact, have no significant effect on your supplementation, especially when these are vitamins and minerals, this does not apply to creatine and protein supplements, which belong to another group”, adds Sabrina.
Excessive use of supplements can lead to serious health problems. Furthermore, indiscriminate consumption can lead to drug interactions, complicating existing health conditions. “Depending on the supplement, in general, toxicity, kidney and liver overload, increased anxiety, and even heart problems can occur, especially with stimulant supplements such as caffeine. Another major risk is interference with absorption of nutrients or even drugs”, says Renata Farrielo, behavioral nutritionist, graduated in sports nutrition from São Camilo University.
To find out if you really need supplements, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional who can carry out a nutritional assessment. Blood tests can help identify specific deficiencies. Additionally, it is crucial to choose supplements from reputable brands that have quality certifications, such as those offered by NSF International or USP.
Among the supplements proven so far are creatine, which improves performance in high-intensity activities; whey protein, which helps achieve the necessary protein intake, especially for athletes; Vitamin D and Omega-3 have been shown to be beneficial for bone and cardiovascular health, respectively.
These products have a history of research that validates their use in specific populations, experts explain, and are generally considered safe when used correctly.
