Just as we once asked ourselves what we wanted to be when we grew up, we must ask ourselves what we wanted to be when we grew up.

Will we grow old? Nobody knows. But what if it happens suddenly and we don’t have a plan? If we want an old age with autonomy, independence and quality of life, we must start planning, taking care of our physical, emotional and financial health.

It’s always time to plan!

To make the most of the time we have left, it is essential to stay healthy. In other words, we cannot talk about active old age without thinking about the importance of a healthy diet, which keeps the body functional and in a good mood. Furthermore, it is essential to plan our finances, trying to guarantee a stable income, capable of covering our expenses, without burdening our children or other family members with this responsibility. Financial decisions that will provide peace of mind in old age must be made well in advance, before entering old age.

Sometimes we are afraid of withdrawing and doing nothing, feeling empty. The worst thing that can happen is to sit on the couch and spend the day watching TV or using your cell phone. Then there is no emotion to resist, there is no way to escape the depression, the feeling of a meaningless life. Our body and brain will atrophy due to lack of activity. We must therefore also prepare for retirement. Plan when we will have time available, when we will stop working or have fewer household chores.

As you get older, relationships are key!

Relationships are an important part of our lives. The better relationships older adults have with family, friends, neighborhoods, and support groups, the better and healthier they will age. Closeness to people, feeling accepted, important and needed prevents isolation among the elderly. Loneliness deteriorates physical and mental health.

To conclude, it is necessary to reflect on the type of old age we want to experience and plan it, thinking about an aging project. So take some time to think about how you plan to age.
