What foods can’t the royal family eat and are banned in public?

Fish is not on the menu at formal events.

The British royal family follows a meal menu with strict dietary rules, ranging from no carbohydrates to foods banned at official events. Former Buckingham Palace chef Darren McGrady explained that the requirements catered to personal preferences and health and safety concerns.

During his time working for the family, from 1982 to 1993, the chef revealed that Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022) maintained a regulated diet, excluding foods such as potatoes, rice and pasta from dinners.

“When the queen dines alone, she is very disciplined. The rule is to avoid starches… She generally chooses dishes such as grilled sole with vegetables and salad,” the chef explained in a 2015 interview with The Telegraph.

McGrady even joked by comparing the Queen’s discipline to that of her husband, Prince Philip (1921-2021), stating that “the Queen eats to live, while Prince Philip lives to eat.”

Food safety is also an ongoing concern. Seafood has been banned from formal events to avoid the risk of food poisoning and embarrassing situations, such as a member of the royal family breaking a crab leg in public.

Concern for animal welfare and some causes also influence the menu. King Charles III, for example, banned foie gras from his tables. According to Queen Camilla, garlic should also be avoided at diplomatic and social events so as not to cause embarrassment due to the smell.
