Russia approves a controversial measure to increase the birth rate: it is forbidden to talk about not having children

What appears to be the beginning of a dystopia is happening now

Russia is not exempt from this endemic “evil” that affects most nations on the planet: its population ages while rates of birth diminish. The caveat is that the country is fully involved in a war, so the situation is a little more serious. In recent days, Russia has decided to face “the challenge” by approving an unclassifiable law.

Russian context and motivation

The Russian State Duma unanimously passed a law banning the so-called “advertising-free children” in an effort to boost the flagging birth rate.

All this happened after official data showed the lower birth rates of the country in 25 years, which the Kremlin has defined as “catastrophic” for the future of the country, especially in the context of the war in Ukraine, which increase in mortality rates.

The values

President Putin, who promotes “traditional values” as a counterpart to what he sees as decline in the West, encouraged women to have at least three children to ensure the continuity of the Russian people.

Despite financial incentives and other stimulus policies, the government feels the need to limit messages that it says discourage motherhood. Put another way: a woman, for example, is prohibited by law from expressing, publicly or privately, whether she wishes not to have children.
