The luxury fruit sector already also offers oranges and strawberries at high prices

At the end of March Del Monte, one of the world’s largest fruit wholesalers, launched Rubyglow, a pineapple ruby in color on the outside, yellow on the inside and with an extremely sweet flavour. The fruit costs 395.99 dollars, which in Brazil would be equivalent to 2,145.39 reais.

Fruit supplies are already exhausted. It might seem like just another eccentricity of the nouveau riche Chinese and Americans. In reality it is. But it is also a new super-luxury fruit market that is leaving many other markets out of the game.

What does a pineapple have to have to be worth so much money?

The answer is more complex than it seems. Rubyglow is a hybrid between pineapple classic and a rare purple variety. A hybrid that also took many years to find its balance. According to the company, it took Del Monte technicians 16 years to develop the fruit.

It must be said that the brand did not create a miracle of agricultural productivity: the pineapple takes two years to grow, since it must be left to ripen on the tree and handled with great care, since it is sold without a crown, in a designer box.

Although, of course, this is only part of the explanation. The other part is related to the market.
