“Layered decor with a variety of textures and a mix of styles always works well. The same goes for holiday decorations: You just need to be a little careful so it doesn’t look chaotic, says interior designer Rebecca Udall.

Her colleague Katie Kuo agrees that playing with textures helps make decor feel luxurious. “Think velvet bows on the tree, crystal and ceramic trees on the shelves, wool throws and cushions on the armchairs and sofas,” she advises.

According to interior designer Zara O’Hara, certain color combinations scream luxury. “I advise choosing a monochrome palette using rich, deep shades – burgundy, dark blue, emerald green. This will create an elegant and stylish atmosphere. Add metallic accents like gold or silver to add a sophisticated touch to the space,” she says.

Interior designer and Christmas decor specialist Thomas Trust believes that one of the most expensive shades is dark brown. “Add black if you have bright rooms: the contrast always works very well. This neutral color palette is both understated and rich,” he says.

Decorate with bows

Bows and ribbons became fashionable in the 2023-2024 season and remained among the trends in 2024-2025: this is one of the easiest ways to make New Year’s decoration more sophisticated.

“You can use brightly colored satin ribbons instead of tinsel – it still looks luxurious. The jewelry that you already have in your collection will get a second wind if you replace the usual lace with a velvet ribbon or bows made from it. Use not only different colors, but also textures that are different from each other – this will add visual interest to the decor, says interior designer Ali Childs.

Add dried flowers and herbs

“Dried flowers are a great way to add natural textures to your decor. Even ordinary bare branches will look spectacular: natural materials will give the composition shape and depth, ”says interior designer Caroline Kent.

The interior design studio’s co-founders, Eli Morford and Lee Lincoln, recommend using artificial leaf garlands as close to the real thing as possible to decorate your Christmas tree. “Layers will not only add volume, but enhance the warm, festive atmosphere,” says Amy.

Try Scandinavian Minimalism

Even in the case of New Year’s decoration, the rule “less is more” applies. “If you want your holiday decor to look expensive, take a minimalist approach. Stick to a simple, muted color palette and be inspired by Scandinavian style: clean lines and simple embellishments. Fewer, but better quality objects convey a sense of elegance more effectively than too many of them,” says interior designer Artem Kropovinsky.

Dim the lights

“Rule number one: Dim the lights,” says interior designer Bethany Adams. – Better yet, light a bouquet of candles, small lanterns and garlands – they will highlight the glass decorations particularly effectively. Don’t be afraid to experiment: use fairy lights with decorations, for example.
