The architects indicate what are the essential elements to make this environment perfect
The kitchen is no longer just a functional space to become the heart of the home. In recent years the concept of the kitchen has evolved, transforming the environment into a welcoming place, not only for those who prepare the food, but also for family and friends who gather to share special moments. Thus, in addition to the stove, refrigerator and worktop, the new ‘living room’ of the residences presents new features that increase interaction and the pleasure of cooking.
But how to create a dream gourmet kitchen or transform your current one? First of all, it must be considered that there are no regulations for the environment in question. It will all depend on the available area and the wishes of the residents, but some elements tend to be frequent.
“A good gourmet kitchen design should promote integration of environmentsoffering adequate space for food preparation, as well as having modern and adequate equipment and comfortable furniture to welcome guests”, reveals architect Paula Passos who, together with architect Danielle Dantas, both from the Dantas & Passos Arquitetura studio , indicates which elements are essential for the design of your gourmet kitchen.
1. Islands
One of the big differences in gourmet cuisine is the central islands that place the chef close to his guests. “In addition to not isolating the ‘chef’, the format ensures that each dish preparation ritual becomes a show in itself,” explains Danielle Dantas. Given its location, it is essential to position a hood and design the lighting of the space, which should preferably be positioned directly on the island.
2. Modern equipment
For the chefs on duty, modern equipment helps ensure better results. The list includes stove or hobauxiliary plates, barbecue – which can be gas or conventional -, electric oven, microwave, freezer, refrigerator, wine cellar, beer maker, coffee maker, dishwasher and many others. Before purchasing appliances, however, it is necessary to evaluate whether there is space available to accommodate all the equipment.

3. Hood
Hoods are incredible for keeping your kitchen clean and grease-free. But how to choose the ideal model for your spaces? Paula Passos indicates that it is necessary to know the dimensions of the stove or hobas this information will define the ideal size of the hood. He also suggests checking the power of the chosen motor, given that the market offers models for both small and larger kitchens, as well as favoring silent motors, which do not create discomfort during use.
There are two models of hoods: wall-mounted and ceiling-mounted. For those who prefer stoves or hob In islandsthe appropriate choice is the ceiling hood. For those who have chosen to place the hob against the wall, the best solution is to install a model fixed to the wall. “When installing the hood it is always better to have it carried out by authorized technical assistance, avoiding errors and loss of the product warranty”, advises Danielle Dantas.
4. Cabinets and hanging supports
The architects of Dantas & Passos Arquitetura are unanimous in stating that the kitchen must be practical and very well organised. Custom-made furniture can help with this, especially cabinets for storing food and items. Another idea is to create overhead supports for spoons, pans, lids and ladles, which, once hung, facilitate access during use and save space.
To organize the environment even better, Paula Passos and Danielle Dantas recommend storing kitchen objects as follows:
- Lids and pots: There is nothing more annoying than choosing a pan and not being able to find it. Architects recommend storing covers separately on an organizational stand. “Even better if organization can be done in a drawer with the lids side by side,” reveals Danielle Dantas.
- Shapes: They appear in different sizes and formats. Try to have shelves near the oven. The nice thing is to separate them by shape and, depending on the size, fit them one inside the other.
- Home appliances: Frequently used appliances with an attractive design and in good condition can be visible and always within reach, such as coffee makers and toasters. Those less used can be stored in a cabinet designed specifically for them.
- Mugs: To make everyday life easier, leave the glasses in a row, always following the same typology. Most used items should be on the lowest, most easily accessible shelves, while less frequently used items should be at the top.
