Does Ozempic really cause hair loss? The doctor answers

Metabolic and nutritional changes after rapid weight loss may be responsible for interrupting the hair growth cycle

Summary

Using Ozempic for weight loss can cause hair loss due to metabolic changes and nutritional deficiencies.

The use of Ozempic, a medicine for type 2 diabetes and obesity, has gained major repercussions due to its weight loss potential and has several side effects, including hair loss. This reaction is not described in the medicine leaflet as a proven side effect, but has occurred in several patients, at varying levels of intensity.

“There are several factors that can contribute to hair loss while using Ozempic for weight loss. Among these, metabolic changes must be considered, such as changes in insulin levels, which can interrupt the hair growth cycle, in addition to the nutritional deficit resulting from a low-calorie diet”, says Danilo S. Talarico, doctor graduated from PUC – Campinas and professor at the Instituto Lapidares on Trichology and Hair Transplant courses. “Additionally, nutritional changes, vitamin deficiencies, lack of protein, and hormonal changes also play a role in this effect.”

The doctor explains that, just like in intensive surgeries, such as bariatric surgery, which involve large weight loss in a short period of time, patients begin to consume a much smaller amount of food and, as a result, ingest less protein and essential nutrients for the correct functioning of the body.

“In parallel to this, when the patient loses weight rapidly and without proper monitoring, this can cause a lack of sufficient nutrients needed for healthy hair growth. During a calorie deficit, the body needs to receive the adequate amount of nutrients to continue functioning properly,” explains Danilo.

According to the doctor, during this treatment, the body faces physiological changes as a new and stressful period. “This can result in a phenomenon known as telogen effluvium, which occurs when, after a stressful event, hair follicles prematurely enter the resting phase and fall out,” he explains. “The period of weight loss can be characterized by a deficiency of amino acids, which are the building blocks of hair. With the absence of fundamental elements for hair growth, such as iron, zinc and biotin, the body stops producing basic functions.”

The doctor suggests nutritional and trichological monitoring to reduce hair loss. “The use of supplements, such as whey protein or even vitamins, may be recommended to correct deficiencies,” he says.

Since it is an adaptation process of the body, hair loss should have a temporary effect and resolve, in most cases, without the need for intervention.

“In a few months the body has to adapt and grow hair again. It is important that patients respect this time, but are aware of possible nutritional deficiencies that may arise during treatment. If the symptoms persist for long periods it is advisable to contact a professional”, concludes Danilo Talarico.
