How about retiring the old blood pressure monitor? And imagine detecting diabetes without a blood test. Because from today it is possible. Only with a video and, of course, with artificial intelligence.
The new system comes from Tokyo, which uses a high-speed camera capable of capturing 150 images per second. The AI algorithm then analyzes the video, focusing on 30 regions of the patient’s face and palm.
The precision is already impressive. These are the preliminary results:
– 94% accuracy in detecting stage 1 hypertension;
– 86% accuracy in identifying above-normal blood pressure, from a 30-second video;
– 75% accuracy in identifying diabetes compared to traditional blood tests.
One of the most transformative aspects of this technology is allowing each of us to monitor our health at home. Or anywhere.
Ryoko Uchida, researcher at the University of Tokyo and author of studystates that this facility will enable early diagnosis and treatment of hypertension and diabetes.
It is still “just” an academic project. But it’s the kind of progress that’s so practical and useful that it will quickly take over the world.
Uchida has a vision of the future: “The camera we use is a prototype, but in the future it could be replaced by an inexpensive sensor, which could be placed on the bathroom mirror or even inserted into a mobile phone.”
