Liniker’s early years
Born in Araraquara, in July 1995, Liniker has had various musical influences since childhood. The courage to sing also came to him in adolescence, when he made his debut in the theatre. Stardom came to her after forming the band Liniker and the Caramelows in 2015, whose music videos quickly reached thousands of views. At the time, Liniker had not yet begun his gender transition, and his artistic performances also worked by thinking about how to subvert stereotypes. Even though she was in a country so violent towards the LGBTQIA+ population, she showed up with a beard, makeup and long skirts, attracting a lot of attention, and openly stated that she faced prejudice.
In that period, after the band’s first EP, Rawsince 2015, which went viral, they financed their first album, with the help of fan crowdfunding, Go back (2016). The album was a success and was considered one of the best of the year, definitively establishing the artists’ names on the music scene.
Acclaim and solo career
The second success of the group was Throat down (2019), when the band performed in around 20 countries, and the album was even praised by the international media. Liniker then decided that she wanted to dedicate herself to other projects and left the group after the tour, in 2020. At that time, the artist was also going through an intense personal moment, as she had recognized herself as a trans woman and had begun her gender transition publicly. Although this has inspired many trans people across Brazil, he also stated in the Podcast Podpahthat the implementation of this process was also violent. After all, many people stopped caring about their music and cared more about judging their appearance.
But the artist knew her talent and knew how important it was to resist trans representation in MPB. His struggle paid off when his debut solo album, Indigo Indigo Butterflyhas been acclaimed and received numerous awards, including the Latin Grammy in 2022.
The era CASHEWS and legacy
Currently, the singer remains undefeated in a successful career, and CASHEWSreleased in August 2024, it draws crowds. To give you an idea, some of the singer’s shows have sold out in less than an hour! The album went beyond the MPB we were used to and explored several other musical genres, such as pop and electronic music. The expectation is that it will also win numerous other awards. In any case, the biggest award Liniker has ever received. It is proof that even in a world so violent and full of prejudices it is possible to dream, make art and pave the way for those to come. And above all: live a full life, beyond what the haters try to impose. May you always continue to shine, Liniker!
