Patrick J. Adams, who played the protagonist Mike Ross in the series “Suits” (2011-2019), revealed that his departure at the end of the seventh season was motivated by mental health problems and alcohol addiction. In an interview with the Dinner’s on Me podcast, hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson (“Modern Family”), the actor detailed how working on the series and personal issues led him to seek change.

“I wasn’t taking care of my mental health and I was drinking too much at the end of season seven. I felt really unhappy and, I guess you could say, pretty depressed,” he said.

Adams explained that drinking was an attempt to deal with insecurities and fears, but that it harmed him in several ways. “I had no tools to deal with that depression other than spending my money and drinking too much. […] It didn’t work. And this certainly affected my relationship, making me an absent father,” he confessed.

Turning point

Married to actress Troian Bellisario (“Pretty Little Liars”), Adams noted that he decided to quit drinking to be a more present father. “The best thing I ever did for myself was to stop drinking. I needed that for everything else in my life to fall into place,” he said.

The actor also revealed that he no longer felt challenged by “Suits” and that staying on the series would only be for the money. “I had nothing left to offer. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and think about the money I have [Gabriel Macht, o Harvey] received in the last two seasons, but I have never regretted leaving. It was the right decision for my marriage,” she said.

Return and new phase of the series

Adams only returned for the final two episodes of “Suits” season 9. Since then, the series has gained popularity when it was made available on Netflix, winning over a new audience and becoming one of the most watched productions on streaming.

The success led to the creation of the spin-off “Suits: LA,” starring Stephen Amell (“Arrow”). The new series will debut on February 23 in the United States, with a special appearance by Gabriel Macht, Harvey Specter from the original series.
